Some of my older ones have pipe cleaners, but what I did (and this includes Derpy) was make the shape with pipe cleaners and then wrap galvanized steel wire around it. I think there's a pic or two of a WIP figure that shows some of the armature, and you can see the wire wrapped around the pipe cleaners.

What I do now is a little different. I sketch what I want the armature to look like, and pin the sketch to a cork board. Then, usually starting with arms and legs, I place pins at points where the wire will bend, and use the pins like a wire jig to wrap the galvanized steel wire around and shape it. Then I twist a main body wire (usually includes the head, and tail if the figure has one)around the arm and leg wires to hold everything together. Last I add another strand of wire in the same way that I did with a pipe cleaner armature, to add strength. I could also twist two wires together ahead of time and skip the last step, I just haven't yet. I've only made two armatures with the jig method so far, so I'm still working on it. Some time I'll take pics of the jig method, it's very simple to do but hard to explain. I'm too clumsy to work with the wire without the jig, it's too slippery. That's also why I used pipe cleaners.

The hardware store. The wire you can get from craft stores is mostly jewelry wire, which isn't suited for the job. Some people use floral wire (especially the fabric covered kind) but I don't think that's galvanized, and I kind of like not having to worry about rust if a figure gets rained on or something. If you get it from a hardware store, you can get a couple hundred feet of wire for pretty cheap. [link] This one's a pretty fine gauge, but I'd use something thicker for dolls larger than the ones I've made so far.

Awesome, thanks so much! I already got some from a craft store, and sure enough they only had jewelry wire. Boy was it expensive for such a small amount! I figured there had to be another source ^.^

The only wire I've seen at craft stores that wasn't expensive was either floral wire, or aluminum, which is a bit soft and fragile. Copper wire from a hardware store would work too, I just use galvanized steel for its rust resistance. Whatever you use, I recommend making stranded wire by twisting two or more strands together. It's less likely to break that way. You can buy stranded wire sometimes, but often it's in "rope" form, which doesn't really hold its shape the way normal wire does.

My style tends to be pretty toony, but pony proportions are still pretty extreme. That's why her proportions ended up like that, I did my style. Thanks for the comment, it makes me happy when someone whose work I admire so much likes something of mine.

I could make BlackWarGreymon, but he wouldn't be cheap because he'd take a lot of time and effort. He's got a lot of little fiddly details. He'd probably be closer to $50.
