The pair had given up on scavenging around the most coastal tree roots when the shadows started to lengthen and it became clearer that it would take more effort than they had the time to give to turn up any more useful debris. Instead they turned further in to the overhanging canopy to look for somewhere above the tide line marked on the surrounding trunks.
It hadn't taken them long to hit the clear channel that they had crossed over several times already during their exploration. The dense network of roots was not nearly as thick here and as they moved further in the trees formed up to make tightly woven walls of a stream. A stream that ran free of salt once they were out of sight of the ocean.
An almost absolute silence had fallen around the two for several yards before the girl broke it with some of her returning exuberance. "Hold on a second!"
Lexi came to an abrupt halt to twiddle her toes in the bottom of the stream. She hadn't noticed at first when there had still been a sand bottom, but now that the footing was more of a mud than a fine, gritty sand it felt really good. Kinda slimy, but she could barely feel her sunburn below the ankles that were buried in silt.
With an excited little squeal she fell to her knees in the water to sink her hands in the muck. It wasn't Banana Boat, but right now it felt just as good.
