Damn finally finished this, and just in time too! (^ v ^')My entry for Smashcon's online art competition!
The theme this year was yokai, and hopefully it fits it! Though I might have mashed multiple different yokai together though... (= v =' )
Also got to try out some new things! I've never drawn a tree before, so that was interesting in its own way, and I also experimented with backlighting as well! What do you guys think?
Also sorry for not uploading in so long, I had to finish this off as well as do some other things so I was kinda busy for a while. However I'll try and go back to uploading more regularly again!

I found your art piece while browsing on the project comment group, and I think that it looks beautiful! The colors match perfectly with each other, they all create a great color scheme together. The lighting and shading is on point. Color-wise, everything looks great except for the background. The sky is almost completely black, I think that it could've looked better if stars or a galaxy-like pattern was added onto it for example. The tree's texture looks a little too smooth. The girl's legs and feet look way too short, compared to the upper-body at least. The boy on the other hand, in my opinion, has a little bit of an awkward pose? It's kind of dumb, but he seems to be sliding off that tree branch... His hands look a little strange too. It's obviously not bad, but there's always some improvement to be done!

I know I could have added a lot more to the background, but due to deadlines reasons I had to leave them out... though I do believe adding some more texture to it could have made it more effective. As for the tree, I'd never actually drawn one before, so it probably doesn't look the best. However I'll look to improving that in the future!
For anatomy and poses, I thought it looked alright but I guess not, huh? I get what you mean by it looks as though the boy is falling off the tree branch, to be honest I probably should have positioned him a bit better. As for his pose now that I take a second look at it it looks as though he's doing a half asian squat (= . = ' )... I think I'll use a couple more references for posing next time!

Good job on this piece you've got here. Colors are excellently done, with them blending quite smoothly with one another. The dark shade really helps emphasize the time, and the lighting also helps bring out the light of the moon right behind them. The extra sparkles is also a neat effect to bring a sort of magical look to the overall image, and the glow in their eyes gives off a more mystical and almost whimsical look to the characters.
Design wise, they're both good, really showing off a sort of Japanese monster feel. Now, my only criticism may actually be their lower half. For the girl, it kinda seems smaller and petite, compared to her upper body. Not tiny, just not exactly parallel in terms of scale. As for the boy, his legs look to be sticking out more from his stomach, rather than a torso. I would suggest lowering them a bit, to allow more of the abdomen to appear.
Other than this, it's a good piece you've made!

The minute I saw the piece I thought the dark background was very interesting with the light of the moon in the distance, and with what seems to be glowing wisp-orbs in the foreground. I wasn't sure if that's part of your aforementioned backlighting experiements, but I like them regardless! The only thing is I think they seem to be in the front of the picture, so not sure if they are like solar-flare like extras for design choice or part of the atmosphere in the setting/part of the context of the picture. Sorry for my confusion-- i suppose if they are part of the background, they could be moved behind the tree's layers, so not to look like fog in front of the tree. They do make a nice triangle in the drawing though, and helps the eye wander around the picture!
The anatomy and character drawings look so good, I really like their hair and eyes how pink they are, and the outfits are great! I immediately thought they blend into the night sky, which is super cool and ninja-like / mysterious but ominous (so yokai, as i understand it ^^).Β they seem to be smirking down at us but playfully/knowingly. They are both super gorgeous characters. Awesome work!!! The tree looks good too, not at all distracting from the picture, and I can tell they are on a tree branch even with how dark the picture is, and the lighting on the tree from theΒ moonlight is a good touch to help separate and show a rounded surface. The only thing I'd suggest would be having added leaves to the tree that may have glistened with the foreground to add something, but that's truly unnecessary. Already an amazing piece!!!

For the glowing orbs, I was planning to do them more like onibi (basically spirit fire) and have them in the foreground to add to the yokai theme, but in the end I ended up using glowing orbs, which is why they're all in front of the tree. However your suggestion of putting some of them behind as part of the background may also have worked really well, and I'll be sure to keep that in mind in the future!
As for leaves, I was originally going to add in some flowers in the foreground, but ultimately ran out of time due to the contest deadline... If I do something similar to this again I'll definitely remember to put in some leaves/ flowers!

I totally understand forgetting and running out of time, too, or just out of energy! So no issues here! I really really like this piece! The orbs still look gorgeous even if they are a little odd ^^ but the context makes sense too, so I getcha now. They'd been really neat little additions if finished but still right now it is 100% awesome
