I feel kind of silly writing a tutorial for something that I just learned how to do myself, but hopefully this can least explain how I used a 3D render to create 2D-looking art and give a few tips on how you can do it too. Just to be clear, you CANNOT make a 3D render that looks like the one on the right without drawing a lot of stuff by hand. You can however, use 3D to create the basic figure shape and pose, along with lighting and shading references that will make things much easier. Be sure to morph your figure's body to a more anime or cartoon shape before rendering too (I think I used Girl 6 body at .40 or something here).

Creating using DAZ Studio 4.6, various products from daz3d.com, and Photoshop CC (and a few Disney princess images for drawing references).Β  Β

Thanks for viewing! If you make anything using this method or have a good 3D preset to share, I hope you'll let me know!

Did you tried the anime/manga shaders/renders available in the DAZ shop? like pwToon, Manga Style shaders, lineRender9000?

Yes, but I've never been all that happy with the results. In my opinion, pwToon can give the best toon look.

Thanks! I should try making something else with this method...I think I only did this one and one other quick test, haha. Β

I've wanted to make a comic or story with my characters for a long time but I'm just too slow of an artist. Thank you though!

I`m always love your 3D toon techniques . Hope you keep doing tutorial which focus on 3d toon render/postwork styles. Yeah maybe its not popular topics but still === awesome !!!!

Thank you very much! I like to come back and experiment with cartoon render styles, but it's been very hard to make big improvements lately. 3D just isn't cut out for making 2D-style art, even professional studios don't usually do it all that well. I'll definitely start experimenting again if we ever get a Disney-style face shape for Genesis 2 though.Β  Thanks again!

Great tips. Do you already tried Jason or Konrad for Gen1? It seems close to western toon styles. I dont know about Genesis1 female version though. But 3DOutlaw from DAZ forums making nice combo between which involved Genesis+A4+Cookie+Kururu etc.Β  Gen2 much more realistic for me so i never touch it. Yeah I think you`re right manipulation viaΒ  photoshop or illustrator still needed. Especially when dealling with color or FXs. Much more easy rather than render multiple times just to get nice and good looking colors.Β  Thanks again for tips . BTW I love your A4/H4 toon eyes packages. Help me so much when I need Toon render styles

I like Genesis 2 because it poses very well and the morphs work nicely together, but there aren't a lot of decent toons for it yet. 3D Universe's more recent characters have not been in the particular style I'm looking for.

It's tough to make progress improving toony renders because it's not just the figure itself, the hair and clothes (and environments) also need to have the right style to look right together. That's why I'm starting to lean more towards the idea of making a 'reference' figure that you can trace, rather than trying to get the 3D models to actually look 2D. In the few traces I did (the Ariel ones and a couple others), the tracing and coloring was not hard at all; fixing the reference was the hard part (biggest problem right now is that the ears on a realistic figure are set much further back from the face than on most 2D figures, and there's no ear movement morph strong enough to move them forward enough). I'm mainly hoping for the right combination or morphs to come along to where I can make and share a toony reference figure for people to use for drawing.Β Β

Thanks!

Wait, i'm confused. If you set the ambient to 100% and the diffuse to 0%, you shouldn't need any lighting at all. 100% ambient is basically no shading at all.

SnowSultan In reply to BishounenTaurus [2014-05-04 01:47:47 +0000 UTC]

You're right, I just checked and I guess I forgot to write the real reason why I used an environmental light. It was so that small reference details would be visible in the render, such as the nose when viewed from the front, a faint outline of the chin and any 'internal' shapes like muscles, fingers that might overlap each other, and so on.

Sorry about that! I'll try to update this pic with that info soon.Β Β

Thanks so much for taking the time to write this up. What's your opinion of 4.6 over 4? I've been loathe to upgrade thinking that my plugins wouldn't work or something. However, if it's better, faster, or has new stuff... I may give it a go.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SnowSultan In reply to kuromeru-panthar [2014-04-30 19:17:29 +0000 UTC]

I'm pretty sure that most plugins, if not all, work OK in 4.6. I also think you're going to need to update to 4.6 for full Genesis 2 compatibility with the latest and future characters. I would just recommend backing up any custom characters (save them as scene files and as poses with the morphs intact) because I think there were some changes in how files are saved. It's more of a precaution, but always a good idea when you update.
