My phone went off, I let go of him to check it out.

"Is someone calling Sunflower?"

"No, it's my alarm. I'm too far from the school to hear the bell, lunch will be over in a minute."

"We should go then."

"Yep."

I got up and started walking with Ivan back to the school.

"Hey Ivan, what class do you have next?"

"History."

"Sweet, we have class together then."

"Da, that is wonderful."

I can't get enough of that smile, it's the best smile I've ever seen. It gives off a vibe, to make anyone around smile.

When Ivan and I walked through the halls together I felt eyes on us, mainly by the girl. I could hear some whispering about us. 99% of it not good.

I also sit alone in all of my classes, but in history, I now sit next to Ivan. When Mr.Mason sat him next to me, I was ecstatic. I heard some moans from some other girls when he was seated next to me. When he sat his stuff down he gave me that smile.

"What luck huh sunflower?"

"Yea it's awesome!"

I smiled again, which makes 2 times.

"Keep doing that."

"Doing what?"

"Smiling, you're prettier when you smile."

I blushed.

"Th-thank you Ivan, the only reason I smile is because of you."

He looked happy.

"I'm glad sunflower."

The teacher caught us.

"Stop talking back there or I'll move you!"

After that we stopped talking and I wasn't paying attention, so when I was called on, I had no clue.

"So, miss ____?"

"I-I don't know."

The kids were laughing at me, all but Ivan, he had a sympathetic look on his face.

"Maybe she's just stupid."

I put my head on my desk and used my arms as a pillo. Then I heard Ivan say,

"Nyet! She's not stupid, she's very smart, in fact I bet she's smarter than all of you!"

Hearing this from Ivan made me a little happy, he defended me when usually nobody would. The whole room went quiet thanks to Ivan's yelling. I looked up at him and he looked angry, could that mean, he really cares about me?

"Thanks Ivan."

When I said this, the angry, almost murderous look faded away.

"No problem sunflower, what they said isn't nice..."

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*ONE MONTH LATER*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Ivan had defended me from the bullies once again. I love him for that. No, I just love him. But I can't tell him, he treats me as a friend, not a girlfriend. The bell rang, I grabbed my stuff and waited outside in the hall for Ivan. When he came out, I pulled him into an empty classroom and out of the crowd. I pulled him into an empty math classroom.

"Ah sunflower! Why did you bring me in here?"

I didn't say anything, I just quickly set my stuff down on a nearby desk and hugged him.

"Thank you Ivan, really, thank you."

He hugged me back without hesitation.

"It's no trouble, I would do it again and again if I had to."

"N-no, it's not that, it's just you're always there for me, and it means a lot to m-me and..."

I tried really hard not to, but I cried. Quietly, but apparently loud enough for Ivan to know I was. He pulled away slightly, enough to see my face, but slightly enough for me to still be in his arms, he looked worried.

"I-I'm sorry sunflower, did I say something wrong?"

I was sobbing, almost silently.

"You, you..."

"I what?!"

"You're so nice to me!"

The bell rang but we didn't move.

"Da, why wouldn't I be?"

"All I've gotten is hate and resent, and even when I met you I was rude! I'm so sorry Ivan!"

"Shh, shh, it's okay sunflower."

He hugged me tightly and I did the same to him until I calmed down, it took me a minute but I did. I let go of him and looked at the floor.

"Ugh, my god Ivan I'm sorry that was completely unacceptable."

He pushed my chin up gently to look at him, he had a soft smile.

"Nyet sunflower, it's okay."

I smiled slightly, he was always good for that. He smiled brighter and said,

"Da, much prettier."

He then grabbed a tissue from the table behind him and wiped my cheeks. I looked up at him and moved a piece of hair in his face to behind his ear. Anything that had to do with his face was always a minor hassle for how tall he is.

"Much handsomer."

He blushed. I hadn't said anything like that before, but it doesn't mean it wasn't true. It was, he was the most handsome kid man I knew, but I wouldn't tell him. He opened his mouth, about to say something when my phone went off. He looked at it as it played russian lullaby, embarrassed I quickly grabbed it and flipped it open, it was my dad.

"Hello?"

My dad was yelling so loud I had to pull the phone away from my ear so I wouldn't deafen myself.

"School called, you're not in class!"

He was so loud I knew Ivan could hear him. He was also slurring, I knew what that meant.

"Yea, I'm not, I'm so-"

"When you get home, you're getting an a$$ whopping!"

My face and voice lowered.

"Yes sir."

Ivan looked at me with a worried look. My father slurring only made me more worried, I hoped that when I got home he'd be passed out.

"You know what, get home right now!"

"Yes sir."

Then he hung up. I didn't look up at Ivan, I just grabbed my bag and said in a shallow voice,

"I'll see you tomorrow Ivan."

I opened the door and heard foot steps following me when I left, so I looked behind me. It was Ivan, he was smiling like nothing happened.

"I'll walk you home, da?"

"N-no Ivan you don't have to, you have to get to class."

"Da, but I want to."

His smile made me want to smile back like usual, but I was on the verge of crying again.

"Are you sure, I live pretty far."

"Da, I like long walks."

I sighed.

"Okay, thanks."

I managed a half smile and we walked out. We walked in silence until Ivan broke it.

"Hey sunflower?"

"Yea Ivan?"

"Ya tebya lublyu."

"Huh?"

After spending so much time with Ivan I had picked up some Russian, but I'd never heard that one before. His face darkened slightly.

"I-I'll tell you later..."

"Uh, okay, as long as it's not anything bad, I'll wait."

I had a small smile, when we got to my house I sighed and the smile ran from my face.

"So, heh heh, I'll see you at school tomorrow okay?"

I had a fake smile on and I think Ivan knew.

"Da, but may I look at your sunflowers real quickly?"

"yea, go ahead, I gotta go inside though."

"Da, I won't be long."

I left Ivan outside while I went in. The second I closed the door I felt a sharp pain on my cheek. I whimpered in pain and my father said with the string scent of alcohol on his breath,

"You b*tch I know you could've been home sooner."

My voice was very quiet.

"Sorry dad."

He picked me up by my hair and slammed my face into the wall. I screamed in pain but was quickly silenced by a blow to my mouth, sending tears down my cheeks. He threw me on the ground and threw his bottle at my leg, shards of glass now sticking out of it and my leg bleeding. I screamed again but I then heard a hard knock at my door, then a banging. Someone kicked my door down but I couldn't see who through my thick tears. I was clutching my leg, it bleeding quickly. I heard my dad say,

"Who the f**k are y-"

He was quickly interrupted.

"Zakroy svoy rot , vy ne imeyete prava govorit' vam svin'yu."

I tried to speak my voice inaudible.

"I-Ivan?"

I wiped the tears from my eyes and looked up, my vision was still blurry but I could see it was still Ivan. He was kicking my father in the chest hard with his boots. I see my dad get up and shove Ivan against the wall, he had a piece of glass up to his neck. He was going to kill him. He was going to kill Ivan, my only friend, the only person I loved. Through all the pain I got up and shakily limped over by them, my dad's back to me, I took my sweatshirt and wrapped it around the front of his neck. With my voice hoarse and tears in my eyes I said,

"Let, him go, NOW."

He did, but then tried and succeeded in stabbing me. He got me in the arm which made me scream in pain again. With my leg, and now my arm bleeding, I collapsed onto the floor. Ivan then punched my dad across the face, which was the last thing I saw before I blacked out.

When I woke up, I was in the hospital with Ivan asleep in a chair next to me, holding my hand. His face and hand were bandaged. I teared up a little seeing Ivan stayed with me. I kissed his nose, which was enough to wake him up.

"Sunflower you're awake!"

He hugged me tightly which made me wince, but I loved it.

"Izvinite sunflower."

"No Ivan, I like it."

I hugged him hard. When I pulled back, I asked.

"How long have I been out?"

His voice was grim.

"Two days."

"W-what?!"

"Da, I was very worried about you..."

"You never left me..."

"Da."

"You care about me..?"

"Da"

I thought for a minute.

"Ivan, before everything happened, you said something to me in Russian. You said you'd tell me what it meant later, well it's later..."

He turned bright red.

"I-I don't know what you're talking about."

I narrowed my eyes at him.

"Yes you do...Ivan, what does it mean?"

"N-Nothing sunflower."

"Ivan please!"

"It means..."

He mumbled.

"What does it mean?"

He was very quiet.

"I love you."

He looked down, his face bright red.

"Ivan..."

I looked at him with soft eyes.

"Do you mean it?"

"D-da."

"I love you too Ivan."

He had the childish smile again, but it was much bigger.

"Moy podsolnechnika"

I leaned over and kissed him, and he kissed me back.

Epilogue.

When I got out of the hospital, I learned that my father was convicted of attempted murder and abuse. Since the house was under his name, I had a week to collect all of my stuff and move out. I was told I could move in with any of my friends, Ivan said I was welcomed in his home and so that's where I went. Ivan was even kind enough to help me pack.

"Hey sunflower?"

"Are you really okay with moving in with me?"

"Of course, why wouldn't I?"

"I don't know, I'm just worried that you'll be around me too much and then not like me."

"Ivan, that's absurd."

I walked over to where he was and leaned on his back, since he was sitting I wrapped my arms around his neck, he put his hands on mine.

"I know, but I'm just worried."

He unearthed a pair of my panties and tossed them away from him, his face a tomato red. I giggled and kissed his cheek.

"You'll be fine Ivan, I promise."
