Description If you use this tutorial to make a deviation of any kind, kindly comment below and tell me so. I'd love to view your work, it, and possibly critique it, if you so desire. You don't have to credit me in the comments, seeing as I didn't actually create Elvish, but I really want to see if you used it.

This took me like, 2 or 3 days. But that's just because I'm distractable.

I also have this available as a Word document, if you want it for printing purposes. Sorry, the computer the Word document was saved on is LONG gone!!!

thanks to for this fabulous workbook !!! I suggest comparing my tutorial and this workbook to get a more rounded view on how to write in Elvish! NOTE: The workbook is a pdf, just to let you know. Apparently this workbook has disappeared!!!

Elvish fonts found at [link] ... They're fabulous, but make sure you use the character map pdf that comes with it, or what you think says "mellon" will actually say ldfyywhw! And yes, that's what it will actually say.

If there is anything else you want to know, just tell me!

P.S.- Want a REAL challenge?? Translate THIS! [link]

P.P.S.- I just noticed this, I messed up the example for Quenya, with the word "Elemmire"... The Tehtar are pretty much all in the wrong place. The "practice" example is correct, however.

P.P.P.S.- OHOHOH. If you wanna learn real elvish, go here, it's a great website!!! [link] ...or you can get the book The Languages of Tolkien's Middle-earth [link] by Ruth S. Noel, it's veeeery helpful.

P.P.P.P.S.- I like P.S... hehehe. Check out this website by .

I take requests/commissions on Elvish calligraphy such as this. Right now it’s free because I’m not a greedy person, but I don’t know how long it will stay that way. Please see my journal [link] for more information.

Thank you to everyone for the comments and the s!

It's Illythiiri, or Drow, from R.A. Salvatore's Drizzt series. The problem with learning it is that there are so many dialects (that comes from there is a different dialect for each of the Houses out there) that it's hard to pin down a decent translation for all of them. I think I'll put up a tutorial like yours, but for the dialect I use, and it'll take quite some time. ^_^

I have been trying so hard to find something like this to help me. I want to get a tattoo (if my parents let me) of my name in elvish but I find that my name is sort of hard to do. Hopefully I will like my name using your guide. Thanks!!!

When I was younger I got so excited that my name(anna) was part of the Elvish alphabet. I went through a phase where I signed my name like that...

Tolkien is awesome...

Very cool tutorial, very helpful. I knew the basics, but this taught me how to do pretty much anything in the Tengwar. Time to go and correct all the pages of crap I've written.

I cannot accept this into the Tolkien group until you edit out in your description the info about Noel's book! (Just kidding, of course, this is awesome and will be in the group in a couple of days, but you should not recommend Ruth Noel's book. Here's a whole web page dedicated to tearing it apart: [link] )

As you can see, not a good book. If you want the best places for Elvish and Tolkien's languages, I recommend www.realelvish.net for casual study and fun (like name translations), and Ardalambion ([link] ) for the hardcore folk. You get plurals, lenitions... crazy stuff.

I haven't tried Council of Elrond, but these two I know are generally correct, especially Ardalambion. Ardalambion has been around since the 90s, it's good stuff.

Hehe, I just used it for the Tengwar, but I couuuld get rid of the recommendation

AinuLaire In reply to snurtz [2010-04-23 03:57:43 +0000 UTC]

Well, at least she got something right XD But when it comes to the language itself, there are tons of errors. Which makes me sadface.

But she's not nearly as bad as the people of Grey Company and their elvish. Complete distortion of the languages.

BTW, this was really awesome to read- I had learned it before a couple of times, but it's nice to have a one-stop place here on dA
