Light made Rem think that the only way to save misa was to kill watari and then L. Light didnt kill him. he 'forced' Rem to! then Rem turned into sand and bam! no L.

Well, I'm pretty sure that Light somehow tricks Remu(Misa's Shinigami) into killing L because Light says something along the lines of " well, either Misa gets taken away (by L when they finally find out who she is) and probably killed for murdering other people, or Remu can kill L & Watari to save Misa's life." And since Remu likes Misa, she does it, and then Remu later turns into dust. So, that also hints that L or Watari was going to kill Misa.
