Translation: John would not allow Rose to die, a death someone may think was inevitable. The real translations a bit different, but let's just leave it at that.

It could still happen! The narrative jumped forward in time quite a bit, we don't know what happened between Rose's death and John & Karkat's first conversation. It makes perfect sense to me that there will be smooching involved, and Hussie's just saving it up for the end-of-the-act awesomeness.
