The following was written on April 30th 2014, my three year "veganniversary". I just didn't get it -- or this picture -- uploaded in time because my life is chaos.

"Roughly fourteen years ago I became a vegetarian after reading a horror story about a downed cow at an earth day festival. Three years ago today I took the next step and woke up to the realities of dairy, too. Ironically this also happened shortly after earth day. For a while I refused to look, claimed that I was "doing my part" as a vegetarian and -- while I respected and looked up to vegans -- I could just never do it. I "couldn't afford it", I "couldn't avoid dairy" and I just "couldn't give up "my" cheese"!

But the truth hurts and I can clearly see now what a selfish hypocrite I was being. When I finally forced myself to watch more and more undercover footage...when I finally educated myself to the facts, how could I continue to fund such a sadistic industry? I couldn't. I couldn't stop thinking about the babies being torn from their mothers. I couldn't get their terrified faces out of my head, their cries and screams haunted me. I couldn't stop thinking about the veal connection and how it was becoming more and more obvious how ridiculous it was for humans to drink the breast milk of another species. I mean, we're so brainwashed by society that you just never really think about it. Then one day it hits you and it's just like: "holycrap how could I have not understood this before!?" It's not rocket science.

I found that all my claims and excuses from before were just that, excuses...lame ones at that. Anyone can afford to be vegan, it just takes a little learning and exploring. You certainly don't need to buy the (sometimes pricey) "vegan meats" or "vegan cheeses" on the market, but there are thousands of options for those who do. Daiya helped me along my journey -- as a former "cheese addict" I really appreciated finding a cruelty free alternative that tasted fantastic. Even when I was still very new to veganism and could clearly recall what cow's milk cheese tasted like, Daiya could have fooled me. As time went on I found it wasn't hard at all -- any "hardship" I went through while discovering what new foods to eat was nothing compared to what these innocent animals go through for man's selfish, unnecessary "pleasures".

So today I celebrate three years of being a vegan and fourteen years as a vegetarian. My only regret is that I was only vegetarian for so long and that I didn't take that next step sooner. If you still consume animal flesh or secretions please, please consider a compassionate change. For the earth, for the animals and for yourself. I never looked back after that day three years ago and I never will. You can't put your blindfold back on once it's been taken off."
