This pencil drawing is of two lions relaxing on the African plains, one male and one female.

Lions belong to the Panthera genus. They can be found in Africa and India. Males are larger than the females and sport a main. Females do most of the hunting despite them being smaller. There are 24,000 wild lions in Africa, but it's estimate that there were hundreds of thousands before European settlers turned up. In India, the lion population is way smaller, at around 670 individuals.

Female lions live for about 16 years, but males only average 9 years. This is because of the roaming and territorial nature of male lions. When they've matured enough to leave a pride, they go roaming in small bands with brothers and cousins to seek out new territory. They can come in conflict with other roaming bands or prides, where they'll attempt to challenge the male who heads a pride that they come upon. These battles can be fatal, hence the shorter lifespan for males.
