Description Hello there. I'm SilverEagle91. For this comparison, I'm comparing the American Dad episode "Shallow Vows" to the Phineas And Ferb movie "Phineas And Ferb: Across The Second Dimension". They both focus on characters trying to earn back someone's trust. To show why Phineas And Ferb did better, I will talk about: The Story, The Conflicted Character, The Hurt Character, The Supporting Characters, Theme, Entertainment, and The Conclusion. Let's start.

The Story:

American Dad: The basic idea behind the episode is where Stan and Francine are celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary, but Stan hurts Francine's feelings when he accidentally reveals he only married her for her looks and she starts letting herself go, prompting him to fix things in time for the party. This plot is fine, but it is very poorly executed.

Phineas And Ferb: The basic idea behind the movie involves Phineas, Ferb, Candace Perry, Doofenshmirtz traveling to an alternate dimension where the former three find out he's a secret agent, which hurt Phineas' feelings due to feeling betrayed. The gang tries to get back to their dimension while avoiding alternate Doofenshmirtz. This plot is executed well.

The Conflicted Character:

American Dad: I really don't like Stan here. In the entire time he's been married to Francine, he's never felt a hint of genuine hint of love for Francine. I get that appearance is important in a marriage, but it shouldn't be the defining factor. Even worse, the episode expects you to sympathize with him because of that.

Phineas And Ferb: Perry is actually really likable here. Unlike Stan, who was incredibly selfish, Perry was doing everything he did to protect the family in order to stay with them, which fits both his secret agent persona and his regular character. What helps is that there was no malice or stupidity on his end.

The Hurt Character:

American Dad: I'm not sure about how I should feel about Francine here. I do feel bad for her considering she married a callously selfish man, but she does come across a bit too hard in her behavior, which makes her less likable, especially with the ending, which I will talk about in "The Conclusion".

Phineas And Ferb: Phineas is actually really likable here, more so than Francine. Besides the fact he has been unhappy before, you can understand his feeling of being betrayed when he thinks Perry didn't take their feelings into consideration. There's also the fact he at least tries to put aside his feelings to focus on the mission.

The Supporting Characters:

American Dad: I'm conflicted with Roger's behavior. He does want to make both Francine and Stan happy, but he should've focused more on them and not preparing the anniversary, which does make him less likable. Also, Hayley and Steve are bland here considering they do virtually nothing, but they're not annoying.

Phineas And Ferb: The characters who stand out well are both of the Candaces, the alternate dimension boys, and both of the Doofenshmirtz's. Candace wants to be in a more serious light like her counterpart is. The boys want to be free since their Perry is missing. Doof wants to be more like his evil counterpart.

Theme:

American Dad: Considering they go too far with Stan's flaws, it turns the message from "earn someone's trust back" to "the person doesn't care, and you should accept it".

Phineas And Ferb: The movie takes on themes of trust, self worth, and growing up, and they all mesh together well and they fit the characters who are supposed to develop.

Entertainment:

American Dad: A lot of the humor is stupid and mean spirited while the emotional moments are morally backwards due to Stan's sociopathic behavior .

Phineas And Ferb: The plot is pretty action packed, but there's plenty of humor to alleviate it and the emotion is morally sound due to the set ups.

The Conclusion:

American Dad: The conclusion is pretty bad. Francine admits she married Stan just for protection, and he's fine with it. The ending essentially glorifies toxic marriages, which is not something to emulate.

Phineas And Ferb: The ending is really great. Although their memories are erased, everyone makes up with Perry, and their relationship is strengthened due to the increased trust even afterward.

Winner: Phineas And Ferb: Across The Second Dimension

Here are the writers for the episodes.

Shallow Vows: Rick Weiner & Kenny Schwartz

Phineas And Ferb: Across The Second Dimension: Dan Povenmire, Jeff Swampy Marsh, Jon Colton Barry

Thanks for reading. Have a good day.
