Description
Hey everyone. This is SofiaBlythe2014. Back in May, there was the announcement of 2 new DC series coming to Cartoon Network and HBO Max. One of those cartoons is called My Adventures With Superman, which already has a 2 season pickup. Since we have more information about this compared to Batman: Caped Crusader, let's break it down.1. What It's About
Here's a description from the article.
"The animated series features twenty-somethings Clark Kent, the bright and driven Lois Lane, and their best friend Jimmy Olsen as they begin to discover who they are and everything they can accomplish together as an investigative reporting team at the Daily Planet."
"My Adventures with Superman follows Clark as he builds his secret Superman identity and embraces his role as the hero of Metropolis – and perhaps the world. Lois, now growing into a star investigative journalist, takes aspiring photographer Jimmy Olsen under her wing. All the while, Clark and Lois are falling in love, sharing adventures, taking down bad guys, stumbling over secrets, and discovering what it means to be Superman and Lois Lane."
What we have is a very basic premise, but it sounds like something that has potential to be great. It's very much a coming of age story dealing with anything life throws at you. The last time a young Superman was the main character was in Legion Of Superheroes, though he was a teenager and dealt with teenage problems. Here, he's a young adult, around college age, something not really explored often in media. You usually have Clark as an adult and he pretty much has things figured out, with his challenges coming from when ideals are questioned. We can watch him and everyone else around him grow into being the heroes we know them to be.
2. The Showrunners
The showrunners for the series are Brendan Clogher, Jake Wyatt, and Josie Campbell. I'd say it's a pretty strong team to handle a Superman series like this. Brendan has worked as a storyboard artist for various action shows and movies like Superman Vs The Elite, Young Justice, Justice League Action, Scooby Doo And Batman: The Brave And The Bold, and She Ra And The Princesses Of Power. He was also a director for Rise Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, his directorial debut, and did pretty well. Jake doesn't have as many credits, but he has some good credentials, such as being a storyboard artist for DuckTales 2017, Invader Zim Enter The Florpus, and Onyx Equinox. They're pretty good. Josie worked on underrated shows like Be Cool Scooby Doo and Justice League Action. She would later be story editor for She Ra And The Princesses Of Power and Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous, which are definitely some of DreamWorks' more ambitious projects. They would definitely do pretty well here.
3. The Voice Cast And Diversity
We only have two voice actors announced so far, but I think we have something pretty interesting here when it comes to diversity. We have Jack Quaid as Clark Kent/Superman and Alice Lee as Lois Lane. I haven't seen too much of Jack Quaid's work, but I mainly know for him voicing Richie Rich in Harvey Girls Forever and Alberto Falcone in Batman: The Long Halloween. He captures the former well, making him socially awkward and spoiled yet well meaning, and captures the more sympathetic side of the latter in wanting to be seen positively by his father also well. He could definitely portray Superman well given the types of roles he's taken up. As for diversity, I think Lois Lane might be Asian American given that Alice Lee, based on pictures I saw of her, seems to be Asian American. Her shorter hair is probably a sign of showing that she has more spunk and a gung ho attitude compared to the mild mannered Clark. We don't have a voice for Jimmy Olsen yet, but the promotional image shows that he's black in this series. It's been shown in a few recent projects, like the Supergirl TV show on The CW, the DVD movie Superman: Red Son, and apparently some comics. Given how Clark and Lois have actors in their late 20s-early 30s, I would assume he would get an actor in that age range. Still, this shows some promise.
4. The Tone
In an interview, Tom Anschiem, the head honcho of Warner Media, said how the Superman movies starring Christopher Reeves will be a large inspiration for the show. It's been years since I've see them, but that's a good direction for the series. Superman is a character representing hope and optimism, which would fit well here. Another article mentioned that this will be a serialized coming of age story, which is also a good call. When done well, combining these elements is a good way to track growth and push your characters to the limit, testing how well they respond to what happens to them yet still maintain hopeful.
I will say that this show has potential to be really good. Let's see how it goes.
