Maverick's eyes have also openedI'm thinking I might keep this one.. He's got a hell of a personality and he's a ham for the camera to boot xD
Maverick in a not-so-silly photo
------------------------------------------------------
About the lighting:
I don't have any lighting equipment and I can't afford any.. which sucks a bit because it's desperately needed :/ Anyway, I jimmy-rigged a desk lamp to be my portrait light.
I took a bowl, cut a hole in the bottom, lined it with foil, stuck the lightbulb through to the desk lamp and pretty much made my own portrait light that way...
Hey, it worked
I had to adjust the white balance on my camera like 20 times. I couldn't figure out which way to go because it just didn't look right. I can't see blue or yellow, but my sister and I struggled with it.. trying to find a setting that didn't cast a blue or yellow/orange hue to my pictures, so thanks Sam :] I know you were getting close to punching me in the end xDD
------------------------------------------------------
Since this photo is getting so much attention, I'd like to re-tell the story of these puppies.
3 weeks ago, we rescued a chihuahua bitch that was heavily pregnant and alarmingly emaciated. She was skin and bones and very very swollen with pups.
I was worried she wouldn't be able to deliver the pups in her state, and was prepared to have an emergency C-Section if need be. I began giving her high calorie supplements and high fat foods, as well as all the water she could drink. Typically, I'm against free-feeding, but she was in such bad condition, I let her eat as much as she wanted and continued to refill the bowl as it emptied.
Two days after we got her, she went into labor. Her first stage of labor lasted nearly 12 hours, which isn't unusual, nor is it anything to worry about.
5am on 15th February, the bitch delivered the twins, Romeo and Juliet, Maverick (the photo'd pup) and Steeler.
I spent the first week of their lives checking them every 20 minutes (even at night), checking the bitch's milk production (to ensure she wasn't developing mastitis) and making sure the pups stayed warm.
Romeo, Juliet, and Steeler are all very large now, but Maverick is still quite small as he's the runt.
Surprisingly, everyone is healthy, gaining weight, and very active.. the bitch included.
I find it upsetting that an owner can let their own animals starve. The owner claimed he didn't know she was pregnant and couldn't figure out why she was getting so fat when he hadn't changed how he was feeding her, so instead of taking her to the vet, he restricted the already small portions of food she was getting.
Please. Educate yourselves before purchasing or adopting a pet. You wouldn't buy a car without doing some research, would you? Cars last, on average, 7 years with one person. Dogs live on average, 12-14 years. Owning a dog is a commitment. Take the time to learn about your breeds, make sure you have the finances to provide for a pet, and please.. PLEASE spay and neuter your animals.
--------------------------------------------------------------
To those who keep commenting on the fact that I refer to the puppies' dam as a "bitch", please understand that I'm using the term properly.
An intact, female dog is called a bitch in the breeding and showing world and I'm accustomed to calling them as such. It is in no way meant to be derogatory.

Unless you are breeding them, I'm going to stud my sire out when for University money when he is old enough. I will hopefully get him into the Kennel Club too. I've got a very small puppy and I would honestly jump in front of a car to save him, I don't care how long he lives, so long as he is happy. Good luck with the bitch and litter, I hope they remain healthy.

Thanks.
I am not breeding any of these puppies, nor am I their breeder. I do, however, breed and show my dachshunds and my boys are out for stud, both AKC Registered (Monty isn't pointed but Hero is AKC Major Pointed and and IABCA International Champion)

Gosh, I wish I understood that! Sorry, I'm only sixteen and don't know much about that kind of thing. I do love dachshunds though, they look really grumpy all the time to me! LOL!!

Such an adorable puppy! And you're right about what you said in the artist comments. Any pet should be treated right. I also totally agree with the "bitch" part. I really can't understand why a word referring to a female dog is used so negatively. Insulting with the word is just using it improperly!

I know what you mean ... i got a puppy recently too.
He was the last one there and his brothers and sisters were taken away. He was left there cuz he was more little comparing with them and none wanted to take care of him. They wanted "perfect cubby dogs" or idk...
The owner even let down the price cuz he didnt think it deserved the money
I took him, his name is Amos and i took care of him. He is now twice as big as he was 2 weeks ago when i took him.
So playful and smart, funny ... this IS the perfect puppy for me.
My familly love him and everything is cool with him, even if he wasnt that healthy 2 weeks ago now he is big and strong - i wonder how "awesome" were the other puppies ... some ppl take the animals for the image it provides and dnt wanna put some extra work/love into it.
Gee ... i for a fact love dogs, had 17 in my country lol

Wow! That's a lot of dogs!
A lot of breeders mark down pups if they're too small. It's sad, but because they're not as big and healthy as others, some breeders thing it's only fair they have to pay less for that particular pup.. it's not because they don't think they're worth a higher price set for a healthier pup... and most will do their best to help out the sickly pup.
I had a sickly pup in one of my dachshund breedings and while the others were sold as show prospect and at a higher price, and I worked and worked with that pup til he started gaining weight. He was just small and didn't have much appetite, but I kept him for 6 months before he got to a suitable enough weight and after I announced he was for adoption, he got a lovely home very quickly
It's all in how the breeder handles the situation....
But I'm glad your puppy is doing better :] I hope he continues to grow in size and personality ^^

The thing is we were going to buy him anyway, no matter price. We had to travel 4 hours to get to the breeder's house.
He was so happy when he saw me, even though others went into house before me, he jumped in my lap straight on...he won me from that second!
He was so skinny and i was worried he was sick but he seemed so happy and showed no sign of health problems. He has pedigree papers and seems all is fine.
The bredeer said to give him food one pack divided in two halfs over the day. He was always hungry and the food kind the breeder gave us made the pup stomach problems and he was bleeding when poop god!
We went to doc and now we have another kind of food + i raised the ratio - i prefer to have a round puppy rather than bonny one, the food is more dry and yes indeed is a bit more expensive but now he is fine, gained weight, no more stomach probz and such. He is not fatty though, but more weight means a happy dog.
He is really smart and in just 1 week he is almost fully potty trained.
So i say it was well worth it, taking care of another life and seeing it grow healthy and happy is just so much of self satisfaction
One lesson for others ... dnt listen what the breeder yalways - is not always right..

Not all breeders are educated in nutrition and proper diet for puppies... but not all breeders aren't, either. I, for one, got my education in Veterinary Technology and had courses in canine nutrition and holisitic animal nutrition for that very reason.
I'm glad your puppy is taking a turn for the better :] And potty trained after a week! Good work :]
What breed is your little pup?

Heheh thank you, and he is a black labrador
I have the feeling that he will become great, i have a paper somewere showing his family tree, his parents and grandpaps were champions at some stuff, so maybe thats why he is potty trained so quick - he is a winner lol uh-huh
