The space elevator**, given advances in material science and with requisite funding, is a superior solution. Rising thousands of miles (or kilometers, if you prefer, to a space station in geostationary orbit, the elevator is the gateway to the stars (or at least the solar system, depending on when we are talking about. This vision is of a massive station, the width of a major city, a tower that qualifies, I think, as a megastructure. Fox Aerospace implemented the addition of docking rings at various elevations to support the increase in intersystem traffic. And a crowning achievement for humanity that learned to work together.
