"Not on my watch," I insist, reaching out telepathically, hyperaccelerating repairs. The lights come back on and a welcome cool breeze hits my brow. "We're on our way, Nat."
Static. Her signal winks out. Punching the console, I yell, "Damn-fucking-nation!"
"Surrender," the ship's Captain tells me.
"You think she'll accept it?" I say. "She has unlimited power. If she gets you, she'll get time travel. Again. We were lucky the first time."
"I think she already has it. I want... " she stops for coughing up blood as I'm hitting the console with an extinguisher. "I want you safe."
"Barter you?" I say. "No way. I will not trade you for a deal with her."
"Damned stubborn Romanian," she complains. "I'd compel you if I could."
"You can't," I say. "Goddess touched, remember. And Nyx wants to torture me endlessly as I'm the avatar of her immortal enemy."
"Can you... she... do anything?"
"Nyx is too strong," I say. "I need to get us - both of us - to comparative safety."
"Then what?"
"One miracle at a time," I say, as another huge plasma blast rocks the ship. And then an energy vice compresses the hull. Alarms sound with hull breaches as I throw myself at the attack. It's like trying to push back againt a tsunami.
Grunting, I try anyway. I don't do giving up.
But the ship is being crushed anyway. I concentrate my energies around the bridge, protecting Tara. I have to save her.
A powerful plasma blast slams into my head and I lose my concentration for a second and my shield over us wavers, and two portions of the hull comes crashing in, crushing Tara to pulp.
