Kako se doručak završio, svako za stolom je otišao na svoju stranu, ka svojim obavezama. Pošto je završio sa manje značajnom papirologijom, Klaus sede u fotelju i dočepa se novina. Prelistavao je stranice, polako čitao, skoro uživo, ali mu se uživanje nije odražavalo na licu. Misli su mu bile okupirane sasvim drugim stvarima. Čitao je reči sa papira, ali ih nije razumeo, kao da su napisane na stranom jeziku. Spusti novine i uhvati se za čelo, trljajući most između očiju.------
