It looks like he did something super stupid, cut off his legs at the knee caps, and is now trying to make it back home, on stubs...
I am assuming he is walking through a watery area filled with a lot of plants? It just... doesn't look like it.

By the armor and sword design, I'd guess early medieval. Maybe around 11th century? The body armor makes me thing East-European, but I could be wrong.

I know. But the combination of a blonde man with a beard, reinforced chainmail and the red cape somehow made me associate with vikings. Although as far as I know, the vikings never favored that kind of short sword.
