In step one, every time I fill it, it just covers the whole face and makes it look like a big blob.
Is there something I did wrong?

Oh, I have one question, though!

I noticed that you colored everything on the layer itself.

When I color, I normally have to choose a layer below my lineart to actually keep the lines.

How can you actually color on the layer itself without coloring over the lines? Did "lock transparency" and the clipping mask have anything to do with it? Because, when I use a clipping mask I STILL have to color below the lineart to preserve the lines.

I'm sorry if that sounded confusing. I can't describe it any better than that. Thank you.

Let me see if I understand this.

So in order to use the mask you should make a folder and then a layer and then after that put the layer at the bttom then click mask to shade so that it dosen't go outside the lines?

Uhm I think i have it Im just not sure and it, it possible to color lines when its in mask from?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

softmode In reply to darkw1ng [2010-05-28 02:38:22 +0000 UTC]

No need to put in folder, they are just to organize. To color lines you make a new layer above (making sure the lines are transparent where there is no lineart) and then color on that new layer. (it needs to have clipping mask enabled)

Very helpful. I've just started using a tablet recently and been playing with Photoshop and couldn't figure out what brush setting would be best to make a semi-painterly effect. Thanks for the tutorial

For extra painterlyness try lowering the flow to around half :3

Very nice, thanks for sharing!
Although the darker shading looks magnificent, I really like the first/earlier shading. It has an almost... water/painty(?) look to it.

i kinda have a question for the shading, when i set my brush it doesint seem to be same as yours, also it shades differently D: hope it works for CS2 version to

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

softmode In reply to AngelicWolf-Lova [2010-01-10 15:17:09 +0000 UTC]

A lot of it is actually manual pressure management on the part of the artist. This brush isn't going to make it easier to draw. CS2 supports the brush settings.
