great tutorial...very nice indeed...do you use smudge tool? because my problem is my drawing always ends up blurry, and i notice nothing in your tutorial says to use them so i was just thinking surely you dont make those effects with just a paint brush without smudging...do you? if you don't, pllllease show me how..thanks!!

This is a great tutorail, thank you!
But one question: how big (pixels) is the artwork you used?

softmode In reply to sl44n3sh-CFA [2009-10-16 03:30:29 +0000 UTC]

Depends. I work at 350 or 600 dpi, so let's say it's 8.5x11... so 8.5 x 350 and 11 x 350.

Nice tutorial !
Just a quick question, how did you create the lineart? are you using illustrator, or you just scan your pencil drawing? because I tried to use Illustrator before, but instead I had same boring line...
Would you be so kind to tell me? thankss, and nice drawing X3

I have to figure out how to fix my pen pressure tool first though xD I've been using Photoshop Elements 3 for most of my life, so now I'm in CS4 and little things like pen pressure really irk me since I can't quite fix them. RAGE

Dude, this is EPIC! You have no idea how stupid i feel never knowing about the expand the 1-3px for the lineart!! I swear i hated everyone that was awesome at Photoshop cause i could never figure out why all my art had white areas around my lines. Lifesaver!

This is the way i've always wanted to color my pics, thanks dude!

pellaeon In reply to ??? [2009-06-22 03:59:05 +0000 UTC]

So this is how the professionals do it!

My coloring technique amounts to nothing more than flat areas of solid color, and usually a character will have just two layers - one for the lines and one for the colors. When I have to do gradients of color I just dial the opacity down to 45% and brush away until there seems to be a smooth transition. And I didn't know anything about clipping masks or bloom before today, even if Photoshop CS2 is my default coloring program. My lack of sophistication is embarrassing!

Seriously, this is very useful and I'll try to follow your tutorial on the next CG I make. I think that if I get used to your method it will improve my speed. Thanks a lot.

softmode In reply to pellaeon [2009-06-22 14:18:44 +0000 UTC]

you can't just use a smooth gradient for everything. If you are doing stylized stuff, explore different coloring methods of that particular style or something similar to it.

Thanks for sharing! I never used photoshop to create the flats, but I'm considering it now after you mentioned the expand pixels by 1-3.
Saves time having to go over the entire canvas looking for white spots.

My main problem with CGing is the choice of colours... I'm so bad at it Orz But I'm glad to see that even the great Doomfest needs to change colours a lot....

Really love how you CG the clothes.
Learned a lot from your tutorial, thanks for sharing your knowledge ^^

softmode In reply to zephi-san [2009-06-21 05:33:33 +0000 UTC]

Anytime, glad to share. When it comes to colors I try to make it as saturated as I can without it looking off, so the colors don't look grimdark or desaturated. It's not on here, but try to come up with the light direction, light color, and shade tint early.

Then, "pull" highlights towards the light color a bit and the shades towards the tint a bit, as you go lighter or darker. I usually use cool colors for the tints and warm colors for the lights.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zephi-san In reply to softmode [2009-06-21 05:59:55 +0000 UTC]

so all in all, how many layers of shades would you use on average. Same with the highlights..

In the end I'm usually using about 2-4 layers of shadows for clothes on top of the base colour, and about 1-2 for highlights.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

softmode In reply to zephi-san [2009-06-21 06:21:20 +0000 UTC]

Four, counting the base colour. (Two shades, one highlight.) Five if I'm doing the tint at the end. Six for the blush. i find that using too many shades makes it look a bit shiny and cheesy. For white clothing, since sharp highlights are practically nonexistent, I can use three. In this case I used four because the skirt is pretty dark and I didn't want the white to be too incohesive, so I added a darker layer.

zephi-san In reply to softmode [2009-06-21 06:38:50 +0000 UTC]

I've still got a heap to learn about basic CGing...
Most of my works have been from experimenting... that's the reason why I use so many layers lol.

One thing which I've noticed when comparing my stuff with yours, is your use of blacks for shading.
I tend to avoid blacks... but in doing so I lose a lot of depth. I think for the next piece I colour...

I'm gonna try what you told me. Increase saturation, use cool colours for shade while warm for highlights.
lol I'm no good with these artistic terminology (never studied art), but I'll do a bit of reading up on colours after my exams end. Thanks again for the help

softmode In reply to zephi-san [2009-06-21 14:24:24 +0000 UTC]

Never use blacks, they destroy saturation and especially make skin look dead. use dark purple and blue, orange, hell any color instead, anywhere but 0% saturation.
