Description
In the U.S., it's estimated that one in every 200 girls between 13 and 19 years old, or one-half of one percent, cut themselves regularly. Those who cut comprise about 70 percent of teen girls who self injure. Two of the most alarming facts about teen cutting are these:
* the number of cases is on the rise, and
* without treatment, many who begin cutting themselves as teens will continue the behavior well into their adult years.

I feel like nowadays itβs WAY more common and it used to be that only girls cut but now itβs more open that guys are cutting. Iβd say about 1/50 kids have cut, or self harmed before. And then 1/150 if they still do it.

I'm upset about it, but I just hate myself so much...but I like the picture, because it brings out some emotion. (To me, that is.)

Whats so hurtful is that the general reaction is a bad one. I'm 18 and i still deal with this issue..
My teenage years were ruined because of it.. And I did and have met others in my shoes, all but one was female.

Would you mind if I used this photo in a collage I will be making to help bring self harm into the light and show people they are not alone when it comes to their feelings and addictions?

It's really sad how many people do it. In my literature class, I wrote a piece on my experiences with self-injury. I was prepared for shock, but two of my editors showed me their scars. Three people in a class of about fourteen.

I wrote a paper on self-injury back when I was in high school... I gave people anonymous questionnaires and the percentage that I got was more like 15-20% in a sample of 95 people age 15-19... scary, huh? Of course, it was a rather small sample & the question wasn't if they did it more than once.. still, it's quite a lot :/

I know cutting is very prevalent in teens (I, myself, are one of the people amung this statistic, after all) but the actual amount is just... overwhelming.
The problem is how often self-harm is just used as part of a fashion statement, or just a grasp for attention as others have said before. The blunt facts are just horrible though.

I self harmed for years and I regret it everyday. Now that i'm pregnant I have something to live for. I have given into temptation only once but I have been asked to give a speech on my life and it's turn for the better. Through personal mistakes I am becoming happy

I'm very saddened by how "hip" and "glamorous" self-injury has become. No one realizes how dangerous it can really be. Not only can SI carry on into adulthood if left untreated, but it also carries the risk of accidental suicide. Self-injury is not cool (and by saying that I'm not saying that you think it is, it's just a statment; just wanted to be clear). SI is an addiction; no different than drugs, smoking, or alcohol. I've struggled with it for 7 years. In the past two years I've become an advocate for awareness, openly speaking about self-injury and researching/writing about it constantly. I went through therapy for five years, but still wasn't able able to break the cycle. It wasn't until this past March, when I sat back and took a look at my life and what I wanted from it, that I was able to truthfully say that I don't want to cut myself anymore. It was a long road and there's still no end in sight. Even though I've made the promise to myself and having cut since then, there's no telling if something could happen that will send me back to that place.
I feel that, instead of glamorizing self-injury, the media really needs to start showing what can happen in the long run. That it's an addiction and dangerous and not something that should be taken lightly. They also need to show that it doesn't only occur in females, nor does it only occur in people who have been physically or sexually abused. They need to start spreading the deep truths about self-injury.
Anyway, I'm sorry about this long post. ^^' Just like ~Tngabor , I'm extremely passionate about this topic. We're actually going to be discussing it in my Social Deviancy class toward the end of this summer session. I'm looking forward to it. Maybe it will make taking summer classes for the first time in my four years of college worth it. XD

Well i guess not just girls, but boys too.
Anyway, i think their number rises because everybody's talking about it like a form of release (and they're talking about it cause it's "deemed" taboo). Which is not good, cause every teenager feels stressed in a way!
The thing that is good about it, is that the people who are doing this(or a part of it - abuse, for example) and watching this work know that they are not alone... but i don't think the internet should a place where this is told, BUT by other people. Internet is just another form of alienation in this case...
...sorry for giving such a "negative" comment, but i just feel so strongly for this subject - self-injury(self-harm).
(and for your other posters for that matter)
Anyway, nice work ^_^
Have a nice day!

Yes, Like mass hysteria, an Experiment that becomes a destructive habit.
Cutting Is completely Taboo which lures teenagers in this day of "rebellion"
Throw in a bit of stress, Bad family life, Abuse and either a "attention whore"
attitude, or even a very isolated suppressed personality, And Ta-dah Self harm becomes
Oh so attractive.

Yes, I agree.
All I can say, is that who's a SI-er and is watching this, don't do it! Maybe you'll feel relieved at that moment of SI-ing, but in the long run it will be only worse and worse!
