I initially made my own brush using ramon's "fur/hair" brush (changed the dab so it was parallel to movement instead of perpendicular) so that's the base, then tidied it up with lots of gradiented strokes. kind of like how you do hair on people i guess - probably still needs improvement.

Cool. I was wondering if you had use a rake-style brush in GIMP or something. I shall have to experiment.

i'd love a rake-style brush - haven't found one yet. GIMP brushes aren't direction sensitive by default - you can make dynamic brushes but it requires making an animation, which is a lot of overhead just to make lines.

I wonder if mypaint can implement functionality that would let you create a rake-style brush. Change the actual brush shape so it's a line, and then have the dabs have a shape independent of the brush shape (eg circular, not a line).

I think 2.8 is going to have tilt sensitivity, which would be cool.
