What is it that amuses you
O dear sweet laughing child?
Is it the way I play with you?
Perhaps the animal-like impressions I make,
Or when I tickle your little tummy?
How do you laugh when you know not yet what is funny?

When I see the genuineness of your laughter,
It reminds me of my days of innocence.
So full of bliss, so full of ignorance;
Oblivious to the snares of the world.
Life was so much simpler then,
Before I too grew up to be a man.

I know you laugh at my foolish theories on life;
I profess my knowledge and learning,
Which seems nonsense to your free mind.
As mine is bound, confined to logic and reason,
Yours is free, innocently divine.
But alas it will only end in time.

It angers and pains me to see you laugh,
For I know that it will forever not last.
In time you too will become a man;
When the system poisons you with knowledge,
While others cheat, hurt and betray you.
Then not long thereafter, you may do as they do.

My plea to you, o laughing child,
Is to never stop laughing.
For indeed there is a divine plan,
To shape a boy into a man.
Logic and reason shows intellect, matter;
Childlike faith shows strength and character.

Remember these your days of laughter,
When life’s misery is too bitter.
Look to the heavens and laugh, son of man.
Weeping endures for the night
But joy comes in the morning.
For if you continue to laugh, son of man,
You, o dear sweet laughing child,
Very soon you will learn to dance.
