Many people use references (and this isn't even traced). That he took money for this is something else tho, it's too similar to the original for that (albeit it's a very different style/abstraction).

If you use a reference, though, you need to credit it. You shouldn't get a DD for something done dishonestly. It wouldn't even be all that bad, if he just credited it! It's still a great pic.

If you are worried about it, why dont you report it?
You can just click the report Deviation and give the link and explain that the ref photo should have been mentioned and dA will take care of it

That's not it; I know what you're talking about, but I never said they shouldn't have gotten a DD. It's a great piece of art. They just ABSOLUTELY should have credited the picture they so OBVIOUSLY heavily referenced! It's like doing a photomanipulation and not crediting the artists you got the photo from! They just need credit is all.

I just don't know how I feel about tracing and getting paid for it is all.
I don't know if doing stuff like that is the norm or not (seeing as I'm not online too much) but after seeing so much outburst I couldn't help but feel "offbeat".

Yeah... If the buyer KNEW it was reffed (Not actually traced but HEAVILY reffed) Then that's fine, but he still needs to credit it.

It's fine to use reference, (as long as you didn't trace it), but you really should credit the photograph you used. The composition, or crop, is taken directly from the photo, which is one of the points the suggester used as to why it's a good piece. But that credit should really be going to the photographer.

In my opinion, he made a nice job and he changed the original picture a lot to be a matter of theft.
But is not right to give your customer a copy... No matter how modified is.

this is ridiculous not only did you get paid for ripping off a picture you got a DD for it good to know dA cares about people ripping other people off...there are so many other artists and pictures more worthy of a DD i feel like this one has been wasted...
