Horse: Falada Maxima

STORY:
The air is buzzing with excitement, but all Adriana and Maxima could feel is nervousness. For this is their first race. Adriana takes in a deep breathe and exhales to calm her nerves, the cold wasn't helping. She began to shiver, feeling goose bumps crawl down her arms and to her legs. Only the hope of finishing the race can warm her frozen limbs once more. She is pacing in front of Maxi's stall, who is already tacked up and ready to run. The mare can see that her master is acting odd, which makes the mare even more excited. She stomps her hooves in anticipation, catching Adri's attention. Realizing that her mood is affecting her horse, she takes in another deep breath and leans against the stall. This time beginning to tap her foot, she catches herself and stands still. Adri hates waiting, as does her impatient horse.
The stable has happy chatter ringing through it from other riders tacking their horses and making small talk. Some appear relaxed and other riders are trying too hard to look calm. Adriana witnesses what everyone else is doing, and wonders how they can look so calm. If she were to smile at this exact moment, she knows the muscles in her cheeks would spaz. She sees the attire everyone else is wearing and hopes she looks ok as she scratches at the stain on her shirt left there from breakfast. Hearing hooves clop on the brick floor, Adriana notices that racers were heading out for the race. "Where is John?" She says to the watchful horse, who replied with a shake of her mane. "He's normally sooooooo punctual. Where on earth can he be? Doesn't he know he's killing my nerves right now?" Adri complains as she throws her arms out to the air dramatically.
Suddenly she hears nails clipping against the floor, followed by light panting, and is discovered by Dagger. Adri's youngest dog, a Belgian malinois who's divine duty is to be her master's support team. "How did you find me, you adorable dog you?" Adri wonders. "She followed her nose" replies John, whose standing behind his dog. Smiling. "I couldn't find you so I figured Dagger would do better. How you feeling?" He says while looking at his wife, realizing that he didn't need an answer. He knows how she's feeling. Terribly nervous. "Relax" he tells her "its your first race, you don't have to win. Just cross that finish line" He says to her as he gives her a warm, soft hug and continues, "But winning is good too" He gives her a small smile, and tries not to overstep on Adri's nerves (that lash out if teased too much). John's phone began to ring, "Seems like that's our cue to head to the starting line, besides... Maxi looks a bit antsy" he says to soften the mood. And they walk out to meet the race.

Cold air is stinging Falada's face as she charges straight forward, giving her body a boost of energy. Her rider gently pulls the reins back, reminding the horse that the race isn't about sprinting. Maxima snorts in understanding, this is what all the training sessions were about. They are cantering through flat land with sparse trees and quickly reaching a steep rocky hill. By the time they reach the base of the hill, Falada was directed to trot. And the pair gracefully travel up the first hill. At the top of the hill, it was easy to see that the afternoon is bringing clouds to a once clear sky. Continuing their journey, they enter a forest. Maxi is currently in a good pace, cantering. As the horse moves her legs gracefully, she inhales the new scents the forest has to offer. She recognized a canine scent, but it didn't exactly smell like the dogs from the ranch. She also smells other horses that have already passed this way. Falada is awoken from her scent distraction from a couple pats on her moist neck. "Your doing so good Falada" Adri says to encourage her horse. The mare can feel that her rider is no longer nervous, but rather is enjoying the ride. Just like when they were training.
After quickly descending another hill safely, the team sees that they are going to cross a river. The sky has clouds that are dropping some light flurries, leaving some snow on the ground. Adri notices that there is a whitetail deer having a drink. It appears to be in shock or just curious, as the horse splashes lightly through the water. The water is quite cold, especially for sweaty bodies. But its temperature did not stop the pair from continuing their journey. Adri can hear the voice of an eagle ringing through the air, giving the atmosphere a magical feeling. Falada's hooves gently pound the cold floor, her breaths are even. The wind plays with her mane, giving the mare natural peace. Both horse and rider are empowered. Each hoof step is delivered with direct confidence. They are not tired, but eager to finish this race. And so they begin their last mile, passing through a lake, with a stream or two following it. All the way until the team finish their very first endurance race.
