Sea Princess Azuri volume 2 is midway through the toning stages, should be done by the end of this month.These are two new characters for volume 2. They're maids in the royal palace so they don't have just the biggest roles or anything, but I luffs them and I'm really happy with their designs. Gibbi is the catfish.. girl.. catgirl...fish... girl.. XD That one. And Cinnabelle is a squidgirl.
I enjoy taking a bit of artistic license with each new mermaid design, I try not to just stamp them all out cookie cutter style with different fish patterns, but to integrate the human and the sea creature as much as possible.
Pardon my moire, shrinking tones isn't always happy. This page will be the illustration opener for chapter 6. It's gonna be a bit cropped in the book 'cause what you see here is the full bleed size.

Cinnabelle is kinda similar to a cecealia, except they're based on octopi.

Did you kind of know right off the bat that that's what you wanted to do with her, or did you have a bunch of other concepts in mind?

Thanks! She hasn't really changed since the very first sketch I did of her ooooh what 3 years ago now... So I guess yeah I knew what I wanted to do with her right off the bat when I decided to have a squidgirl. When it finally came time to draw her in the pages though I was THIS close to changing her around to look more like Ursula only a squid instead of an octopus............. but then I'd seen several people do that already in the mermaid club I'm in so I was like dang I can't do that it would just be copying. The black stripes though were a last minute surprise, heh. I had this idea they would actually be this deep red, I just haven't done a color image of her yet.

Not really, they're pretty simple constructions to me. You want uber detailed mermaids go look at His stuff is gorgeous, those lionfish would give me conniptions trying to draw over and over in panels.
The point of my mermaids is that they follow the beautiful patterns of real sea creatures and are *not* simple sawed in half fish and girls stuck together. Besides, I would hope that my art causes people to stop and look and not just glance over it and pass by!

Actually drawing a character over and over makes it easier each time. I can whip out drawings of Azuri in a snap now.

Oooh...Gibbi...that's so cool. A catfish girl thing...lol. I think they both look awesome, but I have to admit, Gibbi looks freakin awesome with her spots & all. Cinnabelle's tail is very creative, I love how she has the...hmm...would they be called tentacles? I'm not sure...but whatever they are she's rockin 'em! lol.
