Description
I wasn't sure if I should post this or not, because I did realize about half way through this picture that this can be seen as reeeeeeally wierd. But it isn't that wierd, it makes sense in many ways. But I don't intend to spoil the picture by telling about every element that is in there. But in short: it says a lot about their living-conditions.
Also, you'd be surprised how many people end up asking "so what about it?" when you tell them that you are reading about the history of toilet paper. Did you feel an urge to look it up after reading that?

Even though this is very old, I must say, I always wanted to see a cute couple in a outhouse together with their pants down and I found although I imagined it much older X3

This reminds me of a scene from Johnny English.

Hehe, for better or good?
I'm quite sure I have seen the movie but at the moment I can't remember anything at all from it. Strange.

That part where Johnny and an ally of his tried to infiltrate a building/base through the sewage and there was a bunch of men shitting, and then this guy flushed the toilet and the sewage started to be flooded with feces and then... Splat.
Somewhere later on he pulled his gun out, tried to kill someone by shooting at them with his pistol, but it was covered in feces and it didn't do its purpose.

I feel like the word "shit" is fitting here, I can't believe I don't remember something like that.
I'll wait for it to come on TV and see if I recognize something from it.

You're welcome. ^^
So they read the map and use it as toilet paper?

Hehe, no.^^Ā
The actual idea behind this piece was that they where taking a break during a game/play of "find the treasures" (I have no name for the game). So it is an actual "treasure map" that they are reading. I imagine their teacher hid things for the children to go search for. At the same time, they have a secret strategy meeting XDĀ

I actually already know at least part of the history of toilet paper.Ā Thank goodness we've come a long way since Sears catalogs and seashells.
And as for being seen together, houses in ancient Rome had a two-seat arrangement like this as well, so I don't think that's too strange.Ā And if these two are friends (as I believe they are), you can't be much closer of friends than when you're engaging in light discussion while emptying out your bowels and bladder.

Haha, go education XD
And yes, good thing we have come way further then that XD
I am so happy every time someone has enough knowledge to understand the actual depth of the picture^^
Because it is very much a way to show how relaxed their childhood friendship was

LOL - I think it's funny and cute. There was a double outhouse like this out at a campground we used to frequent when I was little. I remember cause it freaked me out when I was seven and someone else tried to come in!! No way was I going to the restroom with some stranger!

I wouldn't want to share with a stranger either, but as a child friends and family doesn't seem strange at all.^^

I really like these character designs, and the inside of the outhouse looks so realistic. I think more shading would help this picture out, but maybe this is just the style you like. Did you use a real outhouse as a reference?

Solkatt In reply to Lee-Sherman [2013-04-10 21:27:53 +0000 UTC]
Thank you^^ It's fun to work with their childhood versions^^
Realistic? You are too kind
I feel the same, it needs more shadows, especially in the corners. Backgrounds are outside my comfort zone so that's the reason I stopped at this level^^ I always risk overworking them and adding more problems then I solve XD
So I guess it becomes a style that I'm comfortable with^^
I did look through a lot of pictures of outhouses to get some details but I didn't have a "single" or "main" reference picture.

I know how you feel! Backgrounds are my biggest failure as an artist. But you've done a good job here.
Do you still have the reference pics, by chance? I have a great horror scene in my head that requires a two-seat outhouse, but I wasn't able to find any useful references.

Backgrounds are evil! XD
Thank you^^
I just looked at them in the browser so I didn't save any of the pictures or the addresses.
If you can search for Swedish results, "dass" and "utedass" gives a lot of good example pictures.^^
