Description After watching Avatar a couple times of the last weeks, I was inspired to draw! So with that and a couple Ryan Church paintings as inspiration, I drew this!

wow wow wow!! That's... SO good! What patience you must have! Hehe. I'm working on an Avatar drawing myself now, of Neyitri, but I'm about to give up on it cause I hate drawing with colors I'll try to finish it though.
Anyways, love all the details, the colors and yeah. Wonderful piece

Thanks a lot! Patience and boredom are the key. lol And also a full playlist on my ipod or Pandora. Love to see the Neytiri drawing if you get it finished! As for drawing with colors, I usually draw in variations of a basic color. Like this one was a blue-purple, so everything that I drew in at the start was either a light blue or a dark blue or whatever until the depth and stuff looked right. Then usually some photoshop color correction helps, and then just draw in different colors on top of that, on a different layer, so you can change the opacity and erase back into it. Helps to color in a little at once and not the whole thing in one go.

Anyways, need any tips or anything, lemme know!

photoshop drawing correction...? What's that? (haha, the only correction I do on photoshop is by my own hand, and usually I don't correct anything I just mess it up even more).
but adding a new layer!! why didn't I think of that! I'll try that, maybe the shading and highlighting will get easier.. cause you know, if you try and put some dark shading over blue (the whole of neyitri is freakin' blue) - it becomes purpleblue. At least for me - which frustrates me...
And I'll take that with me - color in a little at once - not the whole thing in one go
Thanks hehe.

SolutionNyne In reply to ConnieUitsu [2011-05-01 20:22:05 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, using multiple layers will help a lot. Plus there are lots of things in photoshop that can help with shading. What version of photoshop are you using?

The color correction I mentioned can be found by going the 'Image' tab at the top. (where you can adjust canvas and image size) In there, you can find ' Auto Tone' and Auto Color etc. I use them a lot to keep me on track. Also in the same 'Image' tab, you can find ' Adjustments' and then 'Variations'. What that will do is let you adjust the entire color scheme of the whole layer at once. Very helpful for setting moods or something.

It's all a lot more complicate to explain then it is to actually do it, haha Sometime when you have time, try loading up a finished drawing and playing around with all the different stuff in the 'Adjustments' area. It's a lot of fun and can give you some surprising ideas!

ConnieUitsu In reply to SolutionNyne [2011-05-01 21:48:13 +0000 UTC]

I've got CS5. You?
I'll try that out, with auto tone and all that adjustment stuff. hehe. And play around with some other pictures, and not just... work myself blind on my own drawings. hehe.
Thanks for all the good advice! I hope it'll make it easier for me to color stuff. I really really wanna get better at it.

SolutionNyne In reply to ConnieUitsu [2011-05-01 22:28:49 +0000 UTC]

CS4 for me, so I'm sure they are probably pretty similar. The adjustments are pretty fun, with just a couple clicks you can change something from a middle of the day bright landscape to a cool blue night-shot. It helps on skin tones and stuff too cause you can create a lot more subtle shadows and have it look more natural. There is so many options in Photoshop it's ridiculous. I still don't know what half of them do, but it's worthwhile to play with them.

Another thing you might want to play around with is your layer type. Particularly if you are trying to color something in that you've already got some line art for. It's a little drop down box above the layers list. Screen and Multiply are really good for coloring over things and still retaining some of the original color.

hmmm... interesting.
Yeah.. I only know how to draw with photoshop, or.. well, draw simple black and white drawings. Haha.
I don't know anything else, I haven't really gotten that much into it yet, cause it's still pretty new to me. I just started using it in February haha

Indeed. In retrospect, I wish I'd spent a little more time on the little figures on the log, they aren't nearly as well done as the rest of it.
