Description
Still trying to push my realism farther so I took a short break from commissions to work on this. Used some semi-crosshatching techniques with the fur, but what I'm really happy with is the eye. I've been watching 's ustream sessions she recorded and picked up a little bit from her realism and was able to semi-mimic her techniques for coloring eyes to suit what I was doing.See, not going for the traditional markings of Vulpix. I like spicing up pokemon designs a bit. They don't do it much in the show, but they do so I figure I can do the same and still represent the pokemon well. I don't have much of the orange in there yet, but it'll be there soon enough.
And yes I plan on using every single one of those colors over there...except the purple...that one probably won't work.

Seriously that's a great picture of Vulpix...makes you want a pokemon IF they were real XD
Geez...I couldn't do this..but if I wanted to..I need a crap load of practice plus...I want photoshop but I need teaching Q_Q

How I do I do this? By drawing every hair one by one many, many times over to the point where my hand hurts. Gotta fix up the really short muzzle fur though...
We should do something or hang out this weekend. :3

Very nice job. Your fur/realism skills are forever great!
If you don't mind me suggesting, you should put some highlights on the iris, I think it would look very nice. I mean, the eye is very beautiful, has a sincere look from the pose, but maybe a little shine will make it look even better.

Why is it lately people I know going off and proving they are waaaaaaay better then me in the digital media. D= I got nothing on the skill you are doing right here... T_T That is two people in 24 hours demonstrating skills for the first time I am absolutely envious of. I mean, REALLY envious.
I am wondering if I should retire from oC 1.1 after seeing this. I have no idea how I could do this in there... well... maybe... maybe a few last tries before I give up. v.v'
I finally got my friend to show me your special stuff on FA. My gosh, you REALLY need to ditch that shit if that is all the better you can do with it (in practicality) and you have the skills to do THIS. No wonder you said something like you do not really develop as an artist doing that stuff. D=
Honestly, after seeing this, I never want to hear about you doing that stuff again. You are so much better then it. Unless you were drawing it for yourself at this quality to maybe sell prints of, that might be acceptable but I think you really need to get into a crowd that appreciates this realism.
Wow, that sure turned into a rant. D= I hope none of that offended you.

This kinda stuff is overrated...your hand ends up hurting so much while working on it. No wonder 's wrist is hurting/injured. *faint*
Nuuuuu! No retiring for you! I don't know how OC works, but I don't think that would hinder you from it. Believe me...my first few tries at realistic fur failed...epically.
You weren't supposed to look...@__@
But yeah...it all sucks (except one I drew for myself but can't finish 'cause I don't have the time to...and is taking too long to finish 'cause I'm doing the fur like this.. ). I actually have an account there dedicated to realistic pokemon. But I don't see that account being nearly as popular. I'm seriously thinking of clearing out everything on my main account there that I don't like (or at the least moving it to scraps...).
Rants are always fun.

I do not think it is overrated from what I have done. It just... gets boring after a while.
Well, most people would probably call oC 1.1 a really crude digital art program with only four brushes with limited settings. No filters and all layers are set to "Multiply". Essentially, the only really way to do good artwork is to handpaint everything on one layer, which of course is how I do it. Lots of the program's limitations turn lots of people away from it.
People want their normal layers, opacity percent, pen tool, Gaussian blur filter, ect.
Personally? I love this program because it is simple. None of that fancy mumbo jumbo I do not understand and get lost trying to figure out. Just a nice easy way to simulate painting. My planet art on Photoshop (when I had it) was as fancy as I got, but I was basically following directions on how to do them. Virtually no creativity.
Yah, maybe clear out a lot of that tasteless and senseless youknowwhat. Of course you will lose watchers, but then you would be weeding those people out and can focus more on attracting the crowd you really want (and deserve).

I can't use OC since I use a mac.
But I rarely use filters in photoshop. I'm not even using the burn/dodge tools here at all. I do like how the layers are set up. I need the 'multiply' function so I can have the sketch on the top and all the other layers underneath.
This is only 2 layers (I'm not counting the background, sketch, or color palette layers 'cause the sketch and color spots are gonna be removed...and the background's just...not really work... ). I actually don't know how too use a lot of what photoshop offers. Plus I'm using photoshop elements which has a lot less features than CS 2 or 3...
How was it that you were "following directions"?
Heh, yeah. I'm sure I'd loose plenty watchers over there. You can always tell the people who watch you for what you draw and not how you draw it. They can never say anything good about the drawing techniques or what they like about the picture...they just comment on subject matter...

Oh? Elements? I actually have that, but to me it is too crude to use. c.c' I might have to get it out again though and play around with it.
"Following Directions" = "Copying Tutorial Steps"

SombraStudio In reply to Eclipsis [2009-07-16 18:21:31 +0000 UTC]
Element's really isn't that bad. I'm using default brushes 'cause I can't download too many different brushes that're compatible with it. Hence why I'm drawing each hair one by one...
Copying tutorial steps aren't any fun. I tend to combine techniques from different tutorials. Like the way I do fur now is a combination of *Star--Art , ~Novawuff and *Yellow-eyes 's tutorials. I've tried to "copy" tutorial steps, but my results never end up even remotely similar so I've just learned to use what I find useful and either experiment or combine different tips from other tutorials 'til I get the effect that I desire.

I may have very little patience for drawing realistic stuff, but I like drawing like this more than drawing cartoony stuff.
And she's got a few ustream sessions recorded. Here's her channel: [link]
They're pretty long though (some of the up to nearly 2 hours...or close to it ^^: ).

I have very little patience too, but I'd love to be able to paint like this I can tell you really try at realism. It doesn't look the least bit easy.
Thanks for the link That's fine on the length. I'm just happy she has something like this posted publicly. I saw her DD and she's incredible at realism portraits. Absolutely stunning work

Texturing things is the hard part...There's so many different textures of fur that it's hard to render each of them correctly. I'm surprised that the sketch for this even turned out well 'cause I was working with this tiny ref. pic of a Fennec Fox in an encyclopedia.
Star's so awesome! :3 I wish I had enough money to commission her for a hyperrealism portrait...but I don't...

Coronadofwb In reply to SombraStudio [2009-07-16 05:35:13 +0000 UTC]
I can imagine. I wonder if you can sometimes get lost in all of that texturing. Sometimes you just have those strokes of artistic creativity and fortune. I've had pictures with awful references come out much better than some to which I've had very clear references to.
No kidding! There's a number of artists I'd love to commission, but I'm not so sure when I'm going to be able to afford to do so due to university coming up soon

Yeah, you can get lost in the texturing. I might be over working this a little...but...eh...*shrug*
Same. I have a long list of people I'd love to commission. I have commissioned a few people, including Star...but it was for a sketch...that she drew in 15 minutes...it was epic. But I can't buy any super detailed images 'cause they're too expensive and I need to save money for school...

The practice is a good thing though You seem like you're getting the hang of it. Hand me some of that talent when you're done with it XD
I haven't commissioned a single artist. I'm ashamed I would really love to start buying commissions. I wish I could draw an epic sketch in 15 minutes XD I'm still trying to learn how to draw again with the use of guidelines. Someday though! There are artists out there I wouldn't mind spending a lot of money on to have a piece of their amazing work. I'd feel unworthy of their talent the whole time.

But...I need my drawin' skillz. X3 You have drawing skills too! You just need to draw more! Moar I tell thee! I usually can't draw without guidelines. This is one of the rare images I have done without them...but it took forever to sketch 'cause of that.
The time it took me to sketch this without guidelines was about the same time it took me to sketch two other pokemon (Piplup and Spheal) with guidelines.
I wouldn't mind spending hundreds of dollars on artists like Star or Hibbary. I seriously plan on it one day when I have enough money and my own house to hang up their paintings. :3

xP I'm slowly getting back into the groove. I've had this severe urge to draw lately and I've actually sat down and done some quick practice sketches. Not much else though I've had a very large digital painting in hiatus for 16 months. I've drawn without guidelines forever, but I just hated how long it took, and how my anatomy still wasn't where I wanted it, so I've been really working hard to learn. Learning to draw with guidelines after learning how to draw without has not been a fun process, at all. But they really have helped me improve a lot, even though I haven't drawn much since. I'm finding as many tutorials as I can on guidelines. Such a slow process, but so far it's been worth it
It'd absolutely send me to heaven if I could commission *balaa . I'd be so happy! And exactly! When I do buy commissions I do plan to hang them up on the walls. Absolutely!

Drawing with guidelines is so much easier. Drawing with clean guidelines...not so much. But yeah...I try sometimes to draw without the guidelines and it takes too long. I just use lots of circles and lines.
I wanna commission Balaa too! :3 I have a gigantic list of people I wanna commission one day.

Coronadofwb In reply to SombraStudio [2009-07-16 07:23:39 +0000 UTC]
I know that now, fortunately XD I need to practice at my circles as well. I can't draw circles to save my life. I might just have to learn the guidelines technique from you
She's the one I really want a commission from most. She's absolutely my favorite artist and if it weren't for her, I could care less about striving to really improve at art and to really put a lot of feeling into what I'm doing. You're art really is a piece of you, and she made me see that

I know, I'm still trying to pound that fact into my head though XD Guidelines are not always as straightforward as I hoped they would be, unless that's just me XD
She probably isn't now. The majority of commissions that she takes are from conventions she goes to. I follow her on her LJ from time to time. She's had rough spots here and there though. I'm hoping she'll take commissions again when things start picking up for her ^^
