Description A big name for a big hawk.

Felt like I didn't draw any hawk for waay too long. So this started to be just a sketch today "morning", had so much fun with it though, and since it evolved a galaxy in its head, I thought I'd bring it to a more advanced level.

Hope you guys like it!

This is amazing! Howmany different brushes did you use ?

I love the blending and the contrasting colours. The gaze is very powerful

Do you maybe have any tips for doing digital illustration by any chance ._. if you don't mind?

Keep up the great work and have an awesome day

Thanks alot!

I actually used only one brush on this I believe, and yeah some photo textures.

Hm, tips for digital illustration. There's alot I could talk about, but since you started talking about the brush thing - an illustration wont get better just by the brushes. There's no special super pro brush every professional artist uses, in fact many artists just use the default hard round brush. So, if you're starting out I'd recommend you not to go too much into fancy brushes and brushsets, just try learning the basic mechanics, how to blend colors etc. just with the hard round brush. Fancy textured brushes are for the time when you've got the mechanics down, feel confident with what you're doing y'know. Otherwise just the regular thing, your pen is your best friend and doing studies keeps that relationship up. Hope that helps somewhat!

Thank you so much for your reply!

Ahh, yeah I agree with you on that lol xD I'm trying to transition over from Sai to Photoshop for painting, I usually use Ps for my design stuff but I have no clue about how the brushes work and how blending works in ps >_> do you suggest doing the studies on pen & paper or straight with the tablet?

Thanks so much again, it's a big help

Have an awesome day again!

Yeah, honestly I've started out with Sai as well. But its really worth it to switch to photoshop in my opinion that is! Its much more professional with more options. I think its way better for illustration, concept art and such. It took me like a month or two to get used to it, but I can't imagine doing things with Sai now. So, yeah. And don't use the smudge tool too much.
Studies are good with both. But if you wanna hear my opinion - If you wanna do color studies, go for digital. If you do anatomy studies, they're simply easier to do traditionally.

Yeah that's one of the reasons why I want to swap over, and that silly memory limit problem..
Ahh, I can't wait to get used to it xD but these thanks take time.

Ye on photoshop I don't even know what mixes the colours, because the mixer brush is a bit more technical
but I am checking out tutorials on how stuff works. Sai was a bit simpler in these aspects xD

For the typical study do you just choose something you want to do and do it or how does it work exactly?
I don't think I have ever done a legit study, it's always been random doodles or something.

Yeah I still find pen very easy to use, sometimes I wish I could just pen straight onto the pc screen xD,
I feel more comfortable with a real pen in hand instead of my tablet pen.

Thanks so much for the help again, sorry if I'm bothering you >.<

Nah it's fine, don't worry.

Well, I usually think of a topic I wanna improve on. If you struggle with doing portraits, search for some nice photography or stock portraits and try to reproduce them. Same with anatomy, animals, landscapes, materials. You could also try to arrange a still life, they always help (and are fun to me. :v).

Studying is basically trying to reproduce an image, or something you see, and understanding it. Throughly. Like, when I do my portrait studies, I try to understand how the shadows work on skin, which color variation there can be, how the light falls on different areas, how faces can look. Which features one can have and such. So I can basically memorize this and put it into my work later on.

Like, if you do landscapes and struggle with.. lets say grass or trees. Do studies of like 3 different photos, which have completely different lighting, maybe even different terrain and so on. You could also do master studies, means you pick some masterful paintings, often of the "old masters" which have done paintings like you would see in a museum. And study their color usage, composition etc. It can help alot and improve your own paintings! You can learn which styles work, what kind of color variation some masters used and all that stuff. There's basically no end to what you could study.

Awesome

Ok I see, I'll start doing studies then so I can build up knowledge on how to recreate imagery
What study took you the longest to learn?

Yeah still life is fun and I used to do it for school but since I went to uni (3yrs now) I havn't done much illustration or art in general, just doodles (And typical design stuff).
So now Im trying to learn but the more I learn the more I find out I lack xD because the art I did at school was just literally:
Do 5 pieces for final year exhibition + 1 exam practical piece.
There wasn't really any teaching, just help/advice and Art Theory which only looked at analysing artworks ~.~
Now that I think about it, we barely did any studies at all -_-

Thanks so much for explaining I shall be doing tons of studies then, cause I usually just doodle for my daily submission series. Now I have a purpose!
