Twilight put a PokΓ©mon into her X-RAY machine, shut the door, donned protective gear, and started the machine. After a few minutes, she got an image on a screen. She studied it very closely."Aha!" She exclaimed when she saw it: a small pouch inside the stomach that she reasoned stored up energy for use while evolving. She had solved it!
At least, that's what it is in my head-canon.
