Frostbite can become gangrenous in bad cases, which is where you would see necrosis like this.
So this could just be some horrid case of frostbite.

exactly what I meant.Β I've done extreme cold weather survival training (and live in Canada) and had minor frostbite on my toes.Β Luckily I was able to treat it quickly and they are fine now.

did you use prosthetic gelatin for this? I ask as round the thumb, it's got that gelatin look to it.
Looks good, like the transitional aspect of it... it doesn't just stop, which can be a bit of an issue with a large area like the arm.
BTW, found the best thing to color gelatin is food coloring.

Yeah its gelatin. I've used food colouring a lot with burns and I was actually thinking when I was doing this one that I should have made up a couple of batches of black and white gelatin just to get better colour... oh well..
