weightgaming.com has hosted yet another 2-week game jam, and the theme was "in the workplace."
i took this opportunity to make a prototype for a game idea i've had for a lil' while, in which cooking food becomes a sort of RPG-esque timing-based battle system.
i hope you enjoy playing it as much as i enjoyed making it.

Why a rhythm game? All I got out of this was frustration. I had a blast with Streaming Fit with SelphHealth23, Comfy Companion, The Breakfast Chub while this was just an UnderTale clone.

Either play it on easy mode or just look it up on YouTube. There's a completed playthrough. It's worth seeing the end, at least!

One: I suck at rhythms games.
Two: this is a Stroke game it shouldn't be this challenging FattFatt had better system and art.
Three: I never said all rhythm games were Undertale... Plus Undertale is a Bullethell the pretends to be a RPG.

It's trying to ape Undertale, It's preachy, black-and-white, holier-than-thou moralistic drivel whose ultimate message is nothing more thoughtful than "murder is bad". Toby Fox is a mediocre writer, though his imitation of Itoi's writing style seems sufficient to charm enough people.
Has a lot of random humor, but comes off moreso as "ironic tumblr post" flavor than Earthbound-esque surrealism. The music is okay. Too "videogamey" sounding to be memorable at all, but listenable for a game that's only a few hours long tops. Characters are made of cardboard; you really get the impression that the game is trying its damnedest to make you care about them so you can get all feelsy when bad things happen to them, but they don't really have enough depth for this to work. Good ending is super saccharine; neutral/bad endings are tryhard "if you play violent games you are a bad person" social critique that says nothing meaningful about anything.
If you like RPG Maker games like OFF, Ib, End Roll, Yume Nikki etc it's way more similar to those than Mother, really. That's not for lack of trying on the creator's part, though. There's enough Mother references crammed in there to be a choking hazard.

"Just tried out the game, and I really like what I saw so far. One thing that I would like to have in the future is more mechanics to the βcombatβ aspect. Maybe more reaction or skill-based mini-games that interchange with each round of βcombatβ? Or more options to choose from in addition to just βcookβ and βitemsβ.
As for the difficulty, I honestly havenβt found it to be that hard, but seeing as I do like playing more than a few games that rely on reflexes, Iβm kinda biased on that. But yeah, for some folks that want a more casual experience, it might be good to slow the whole thing down with a difficulty selection.

But what does that have to do with this niche fetish game?
There is no "holier-than-thou" "murder is bad" message to be seen in this game. That's why you hate Undertale, yes?
Or is it "bad writing"? Well if that's the case than it's subjective based on preference, but hell it's a fetish game, so why does it matter?
To your final point of "oh it should be a puzzle game instead of a rhythm game to be more accessible since it's such a niche topic".
Why does that matter in any capacity? It doesn't matter whatever the game is, as long as people enjoy it and the creator enjoys creating it.
Clearly, you're one of the minority who can't simply enjoy it for what it is, be it difficulty or ignorance. You can't even acknowledge the amount of time and effort to make a game itself.

What a fantastic demo! I was genuinely disheartened when I realized it was already over. I love the combat! My rhythm game experience allowed me to destroy the timing base that it had and I don't think I've ever enjoyed a game like this just because of the gameplay itself this much before!

I think I'm having an issue with the game.
I open the .exe file and it just shows a black screen, I press z and I get nothing still except for text noises and music, The folder I have only have 3 files, The .Exe file, An Audio file, and a file named Data.win, is there something i'm missing?

extract all the files into a folder, and just click on "Culinary Combat.exe"
