[link] was the first version of it. A customer (a nice adorable beautiful customer
) asked me for a new chain to go with it.. Hence 23 boulder opal beads, 24 gold beads and a rolo chain.. So, yes, this opal is gone but to a very cool/happy new mom who will not be eaten when Cthulhu is back

Gorgeous, I love the fine details in all your work.
But how costly is this kinda thing you do? I do beading and it's hard to keep it on budget while still buying semi-precious, gold-filled, and sterling. And you work with expensive semi-precious, precious, gold beads, and cast you stuff in gold or silver. Of course you sell many of these things and do it for costumers who are willing to pay, but really how much do you usually spend per necklace?

mmm.. you're right, it's a difficult balance. Sometimes, I've got extra $ so I make something very expensive, on a bet. Cthulhu gold was a bet. I sold it in the end and added gold chain, boulder beads etc but it was a bet
For regular pricey items, I try to mostly make them on commission and then ask between 30 and 50% in advance. It helps me cover all the materials.
But over time, I really built myself a consistent and plump stock of gemstones.. I mostly find what I need in my stash. If I need extra bits, they'll be easily covered by the advance.
