Horse SWF Splashin In It
Rider Prince Trinity
Country: USA/Oregon.
Stable: Song Wolf Farm
Ref Endurance 006
How this was made: Traditionally! Using my trusty clicky pencil and colored pencils. Yes, I suck at drawing trees. Deal with it. I tried lol Took photo of this with ipad, so it could be crisper but...I did put a lot of work into this. There is I believe...5 layers of blues and greys on Indy himself, and maybe the same for the longer grass. Maybe I'll sharpen it up later, if I can. The paper's too wide to scan, and the scanner does wierd things to paper. IE...it scans as a pdf for some reason...and other stuff. Initially I was going to have both horses/riders in 1 image but there just wasn't enough space. So I'll get started on Demon and Damon's entry next week.
Only In The Distance
It was like a moment in time when all four of them arrived at the Como show grounds. Horses and riders milled around, collected entry numbers, or generally goofed off. All Trinity had his attention on was the stallion close by his side. He had just been groomed and shone like…well, a well groomed horse. He couldn't think of anything blue and white that was exceptionally shiny other than maybe water at certain times of the day. Indy's brand new Western endurance tack had been broken in during their rides leading up to the show so had that distinct leathery horse smell. One of the best smells out there, if Trinity and Damon were the judges on smell.
Indy craned his neck to the side and looked over at Demon. The slightly taller stallion was worse off than he was. Demon had been born wild and spent a few years out in the New Zealand landscape. He had been trained by an equally impressive trainer who had an eye for the inner thoughts and emotional wounds of each horse, that Indy had. But their birth had been far different. While Indy had been born in a soft box stall sheltered from a very windy day that soon brought forth a torrential thunderstorm, Demon had to fend for himself from the moment he was on his feet. There was no time to try out those legs, he had to use them well right away or face death from any number of possibilities. His mother was young too, not wholly prepared for her roll as teacher or protectorate. She was being taught right alongside him, so he had been more of a herd baby than a mother's baby. He felt safe within the herd, but when his sire drove him from the herd and he had to fend for himself, he became a hard animal to get close to. He learned that no matter how comfortable you got, upheavals happened and maybe safety was just another figment of his imagination. Thus began the demon within the Demon. This ride with the calmer, shorter, yet almost equally testy domestic born stallion would be interesting. Maybe he could teach him something, and vice versa.
On the trails, Trinity and Damon often spoke about their training techniques, although it was Damon that did all the learning, having only trained one horse while Trinity had so far trained 3 and was now starting to work on a string of broodmares. Plus, there was talk on another Paint stallion coming to the farm.
The day was hot, sometimes so hot that you could stare off into space and see the haze of moving hot air and feel almost dizzy watching it slither around. It was a good thing they brought with them some SPF 15 for Damon. Trinity just had rather hot skin under his fur, so he drank a lot of water and kept his head cool. During check points he'd often shift into his full tiger form and slink off in search of a water hole to dive into for some relief.
To combat the heat, the horses often had cold water or ice wrapped onto their legs to keep cool, and at check points they were thoroughly watered and hosed down. Many a horse at those check points were seen with quivering lips and appreciation on their faces.
Half of the time that Indy was being conditioned for this endurance run, Demon went along. Both of their riders thought that maybe the calm demeanor of the Paint stallion would rub off on the Kaimanawa stallion. Neither one really knew it had been successful or not, during the Como ride. Maybe it did, maybe it didn't, it was hard to tell. He'd shy at twigs being broken under his own hooves, skitter sideways when he heard birds in the trees, but he refused to unseat his trusting rider, so maybe he was turning a corner in his training and would be able to improve not only his fears, but his self confidence and enter show rings in the future with success.
Como wasn't just a run to support Mustangs, but it was a way for both stallions, and both riders to get to know each other on a more personal level. It was strange that way; 25,000 acres back at home, a lot of 'people' working and living out there…but they barely knew each other at all.
"You know what we need back at home, Trin?" Damon felt comfortable enough, as they were heading to the finish line, to call his acquaintance by his nickname.
"Yeah. I think we need a Mustang." He smiled to himself, thinking of the black Mustang colt he had camped out with out west before he had met Myrianna and moved to the farm.
"Umh…Okay. But actually what I was thinking was…we need our own endurance run for farm staff to get to know each other. There's so many of us, and so little known about each." Damon replied, thoughtfully.
"Not a bad idea. Maybe this fall after foals are born. Out in the mountains." Trinity returned, and they rode in silence for the rest of the night, each knowing nothing more was needed but for the company of the other.
