At first glance: two boys in a doorway downtown. It wasn't until later that I noticed the depth of the contrast between them, and what a metaphor could be made of a simple lighting parallel.

The boy with golden hair, illuminated by the sunlight, looks clearly into the camera with an impassive expression; as though he has nothing to hide and his earnest calm is as apparent as the sunshine. The boy in black, on the other hand, is not only standing in shadow, but keeps his gaze downward and his expression pensive; his dark clothing reflects his air of inward focus and a more introverted energy.

It's amazing to me how you can take a photo of two subjects thinking that they are beautiful and then look at the result and realize that you were wrong - that what they actually are is dazzling.
