Description

Before 2013 ends, I want to share my personal thoughts and feelings on an object that was a lot of fun. That toy, which my family got ten years ago is, the 2001 Nintendo Game-Cube.

The system was a November 2003 birthday present (from one of my Aunts I ponder) to me and my siblings (we all are born in the autumn/winter season), as well as our first video-gaming console (unless you count PCs). We had some games to go with the box and later bought some others/or had them as later presents. The platform was fun, and a blast to handle. At first, I had trouble since I was “nine” and wasn’t able to comprehend or figure out the mechanics. That, and some levels, enemies, or gameplay were impossible for me: so I always needed help.  Eventually, I overcame the difficulties and mastered the system and games. Unfortunately, Nintendo stopped production of the GC when they produced and put out the “Wii”. The Wii is pleasant to, and is better in fitness, since the user has to stand up to play (at least I do). However, the GC is special to me. It was released in the early 2000s (with it’s first game being Luigi’s Mansion in 2001), the graphics are cartoonish, the controller requires two hands, and more factors that make it superior to the Wii and the Wii’s games.

Before I name some good games, I will confess some pretty downer moments of the cubeic system… Oh, I forgot to put Cubix on this picture. Like most families, drama sometimes stires out of playing, and for no rational reason. And the GC has been replaced for multiple times. Also, some games are so scratched that they do not work anymore, and need special cleaning jobs. With that out of the way, here is a list of video games that are special or important, or just randomly chosen for this picture.

“Super Mario Sunshine” (2002)

This was how I learned about Mario better. I knew him as a NES person from my best friends’ family (who were like the BF family kids to us). Mario Sunshine was fun. It had excellent gameplay, a great story, lovable characters, and why the shell am I explaining the game to you? You probably have it, and know how to express it already. You do not need my help. Well, to those who do not know, the story is that Mario and friends take a vacation to Isle Delfino, where Mario is framed for pollution, and must clean the island up with his new buddy F.L.U.D.D. Fludd is a wonderful and almost under-noticed  Mario franchise character. While on topic with Mario, games like “Mario Party 5” and”Mario Kart: Double Dash” were also good games.

“Wallace & Gromit in Project Zoo” (2003)

I have already talked about this one on its 10th Anniversary picture, but I’ll explain the facts and share my personal perception on it still. It was the FIRST GC game I played. It’s an exciting adventure where the dynamic duo has to rescue the local zoo from their arch-penguin-nemeses. The gameplay is great and so are the scenes and levels.

“Animal Crossing” (2001)
Released in the U.S. in 2002, (and I think we got it in 2004 from Toys R Us), this game is a system classic. It is simple, storyless, and basically a game of life set in a town of intelligent animals. Even if it can get boring or gives out too mask task, it is a wonderful charming cute game.

“Finding Nemo” (2003)

This is one of the best games based off a movie ever created (speaking of which, I should do a list of film based video games). It is basically the same story as the film, but added or alternated. The gameplay is excellent, the atmosphere is darker than the motion picture, and it is… some adjective, to see the characters explain the GameCube controls. However, the spotlight of the game is its soundtrack. It captures the feeling of the ocean with whatever instruments the recording studio used: which does sound Newageish. My favorite music picks from it are “the Title Theme” and “Field Trip”. I must admit, I enjoy the game’s music more than the score from the actual Pixar movie.

“Disney’s Party” (2003)

What happens when the developers of the Mario Party series (Hudson Soft) make a Disney-Styled rip-off? You get Mario Party only with Disney characters are alternated gameplay. This game was still fun, and is probably the best and most underrated (well, of the 2000s) Disney game. Sigh…  I really want to play it now. A new character debut to come along with this installment in the House of Mouse’s merchandise empire is a ghost named “Billy”. I though he looked more like a robot instead of a ghost. However, I later learned that he is invisible, and has put armory junk upon himself to be seen. What I admire about this game (as opposed to the MP games), is the locations in it, and that their mini-games match the area. And yeah, the mini-games are fun as well. One minor problem is that the “A’ and the “B”, which are usually A-Jump and B-Whatever, are in reverse for some reason.

“Super Monkey Ball” (2001)

This is a good game: What more should I say? It is a monkey, in a ball, rolling around to collect bananas- so that he (or one she) can hit a goal ribbon and ascend into outer space. And in addition, the levels take place upon platforms floating above land and near anything tall or also floating. The four main characters (AiAi, MeeMee, GonGon, and Baby), are so lovable that it probably should be considered difficult to mock them. ;D The second game is good as well, and the third one “Adventures”…  it’s okay, I don’t agree with all the hate. However, it feels different for not using the same mechanics.

“LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game” (2005)

Two subjects, and words as well….  “LEGO”, and “Star Wars”. What else that blends well together can possibly make a fantastic video game? This pilot installment to both the LSW game series and games based off lego licensed themes is a fun multiplayer (two-player more precisely) and great adaptation and/or parody of the Star Wars I, II, and III (or….  The prequels…  I don’t like calling them that). Characters like Anakin Skywalker, Qui-Gon Jinn, and even Darth Vader can be played in their levels of story, or in “Free Play”, where any character can played despite the area of story. This is no doubt the best of the post-PC lego games, for it’s atmosphere and mechanic-design. And, it is better than the recent games…  They don’t just get too boring to quickly (even if the gameplay is enhanced), they are botched with dialog. In my opinion, this is the GREATEST Star Wars game ever “built”. Oh, and I gues now, since Disney owns Lucasfilm…  It is s Disney game and nice lego game (which was a birthday present with the GC) is “Lego Drome Racers”, which is like a sequel to the 4-D movie at Legoland.

“Sonic Riders” (2006)

After playing the classic games on “Sonic Mega Collection” at a “Cool Cuts for Kids” (where I also played the Wind Waker briefly), I wanted to get into sonic. This game seemed cool from the demo, so it was the one I wanted. It is a fun game to play, racing on Hover-Boards and riding other people’s wind. However, the story is up and down due to its pagan nature and for having some mean characters. I was going to go into my history with Sonic (which began in 2006), and my option about him, but I am too lazy right now. So, I’ll just tell you that Mario is better, and my favorite character is Tails.

“Chibi-Robo!”  (2006)

I was game obsessed at the time, and this was one of the ones I bought for…. I don’t remember why. It is a cute game and such… but it is complicated and makes Animal Crossing look excitinger. However, It was pleasant to play when I played it, and my youngest siblings really love it. So, it does have a place on this picture. But, “Drawn-to-Life” for the D.S. (or DS) is a much better game.

For the art, I used a trick I learned from a “Kid Gravity” comic on the cube. I just drew to flight squares, and connected them to form a box. I used pencil to get its shape as right as I could get. I colored it, and the backgrounds with pencil: and even the background are entirely pencil. The characters and GC aspects (like the Cube itself, the controller, and the memory card) were done with sharpie. Pencil was used on the cube and some characters to be colored in. And the colors at the bottom (around the logo) and in-between characters and worlds were sharpie done. It would be nice to see it in a museum, but a convention seems more plausible.

I ended up not buying any games. They were fairly pricey, and the games I did want I can always get cheaper online.

Let us not forget Super Smash Bros. Melee!

But my fave on that console was (and still is) Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.
