Description
(Story by lizardman22 )Adelaide Alice paused as she entered the chamber, her eyes focused on the large pit before her. A strange sound, like escaping gas emanated from it. Adelaide moved closer and peered down. The floor of the pit undulated, and the kangaroo gasped as she realized what she was looking at."Snakes," the kangaroo said. "It just had to be snakes."
She was sure that she could count at least a couple dozen of them, and of all various species. Adelaide Alice backed up, weighing her options.
"It's too far to jump," she murmured to herself. "Damn it, what now?"
"Wait, what did she mean it's too far to jump?"
The gathering of friends turned and looked at Rosa as the red-bellied black snake spoke. The movie night had originally been Hisspan's idea, and with the technical help from Terrance in setting up the TV, a camera for him to watch, plus his suggestion at a fun adventure movie, they were all seated about for the entertainment.
"The pit is too far to jump across," Tashako replied. "She needs to find another way around."
Rosa shook her head.
"She can make it. Remember a few scenes ago when she crossed the lava river by hopping on the stone blocks? Some of those jumps were at least half her body length longer than this pit."
"Are you sure?" Tashako asked.
"Very sure," Rosa said. "Terrance, can you go back and check?"
Terrance's voice spoke from a speaker.
"Can do, Rosa."
A small box opened up in the bottom right of the TV screen, showing the scene Rosa referenced. Just as she said, a few of the kangaroo's jump had indeed been longer.
"Impressive," Tashako whispered to himself, making notes in his notepad.
Marybeth spoke up, the reticulated python enjoying the action on screen.
"Even if she doesn't jump, why not run the wall? A bit of speed in her run-up and she'd be able to carry herself halfway around and then push off from the wall to make the other side."
Before anyone could reply the kangaroo gave her answer on the screen. The friends watched as Adelaide slowly began to swing across, using a sturdy vine to her advantage. From below the snakes noticed, and began to slither up.
"Hey look, it's me!" Hisspan cried out excitedly, pointing to a green cobra on the TV.
"It is very close," Noah replied. "Slightly different markings, but it could pass."
Hisspan giggled.
"Would all those snakes co-exist?" Tashako asked, his notepad filling up with ideas.
Noah shook his head.
"Not really," he said. "In real life some of them would be preying on the others. But for the purposes of the movie, I guess it works."
Hisspan giggled again. The movie night was going well. The banter of her friends was encouraging, and they all seemed to be enjoying themselves. Well, almost all. The cobra glanced over at Cynthia. The Burmese python fidgeted and frowned.
"Are you OK, Cyn?"
Cynthia put on a smile.
"I'm OK," she answered.
"You're stressed," Rebar suddenly said, her voice hardly raising above it's usual whisper.
One of Rebar's closed eyes opened slightly and she smiled kindly at Cynthia.
"I can hear your breathing and heartbeat. What's wrong?"
"Well," Cynthia started, "I guess I'm worried about all the work I should really be doing right now."
"Work can wait," Hisspan said. "You need time to have fun, Cyn."
Terrance spoke up as he listened in.
"You could always bring some things in next time. Do a bit of knitting or sewing as you watch."
"Hey, that's a great idea," Hisspan replied, smiling across to her friend.
Cynthia nodded, taking the suggestion to mind.
"You wouldn't mind if I did that, would you, Hisspan?"
Hisspan shook her head.
"Of course not," she replied. "As long as it helps you enjoy the night."
Reba spoke, her eyes once again closed as she focused on the sounds and music from the movie.
"Something dramatic is about to happen. The slow build up of music carrying weight and scored to create tension. Adelaide's in trouble."
Eyes all looked to the movie, watching as Adelaide Alice gasped. She was halfway across the pit, and from below the snakes were almost upon her. It was just her luck that the vine was now beginning to tear from it's roots. The friends held their collective breaths. How would Adelaide get out of this now..?
After a bit too long, a collab with lizardman22 . And I think it's the most ambitious one to date for both of us: nine characters and a very lengthy story. He didn't provide a title, but my working title was pretty much perfect anyways.
