Wait, I'm thinking that Shadow may have taken the potion. There are 2 good hints.
1) You said Shadow would be a main character.
2) On page 6, if you look hard enough at the last panel, you would see that Sonic took the wrong cup, or that Amy put the potion in the wrong cup.

But, I could as well be Tails....
Or Knuckles...
