this symbol is the Mark of the Fallen Celestial Goddess. those who receive it are marked as sacrificial offerings to the creatures of the nether realm, their deaths feeding life to enable the transition of one chosen to be an emissary of Abyssia from the physical world to the nether realm they reside.

those who survive through the massacre are able to see these malevolent beings, as they reside in what the Lythians refer to as a bridge between the physical realm and the nether realm, as the mark attracts the creatures of darkness and the restless souls of the dead with wicked intentions.

naturally, the mark will bleed and cause pain. Around ordinary evil spirits or demons, the blood will only trickle out, and the pain will be relatively minimal. Around one of the five Angels of Abyssia, the mark will shoot blood out in huge gushes, and the pain inflicted will be agonizing. If the evil is too great, (if one is around Abyssia herself for example) it can supposedly kill those who bear her Mark.

(Sophie is gonna bear this mark as well, in the upcoming two Legend of Spyro stories of mine.
as such, Curse of the Dark is considered a foreshadowing of what she and other few Lythians are gonna go through.)
