Design and Layouts- Wendy PiniPencils and Inks- Me
From my apprenticeship with Wendy Pini. From the book "Elfquest: In all but Blood."
The scene: Skywise, possessed by sorcery, strips off his clothes and leaps over a cliff into the ocean to the horror of the other elves. But Cutter believes, in spite of everything, that Skywise lives.
When Wendy showed her layouts she said, "If the last two panels were reversed it would lack the hope that Cutter feels."

Your artwork is nothing short of amazing. It has captured both the beauty and the fierceness that Wendy Pini herself had put into Elfquest all her years of drawing and creating. I have not seen a better likeness and I do believe that she had chosen well when picking you as an apprentice. The detail is so amazing I thought I was looking at Wendy Pini's art herself, but your flare of your own is in and I do appreciate that because it makes it all the more amazing.

This is my favorite story in that book, and my favorite art done by you is in this very story as well. This was the point you truly nailed EQ, and these panels in particular I love. I dare say they look better than Wendy's own art. There's just something about this page, about the art you did for this, that I honestly like better than Wendy's. Which is saying a lot, I love her art and style as well.

Thanks for the high praise. This was the book where I was trying the hardest to mimic her style. I then did the Troll Games and Soul Names story (even though I think it appears first in the book)and Wendy basically let me run rampant and was all over the map. I think today, 10 years later, I could probably mimic her style even better because a lot of what was missing was some basic drawing skills. All the lessons she taught me over that year echoed in my head (even to this day) and I finally learned them afterward.

Hmmm that does make sense about reversing the last two panels. I really must get off my rear and read Elfquest. It seems like a really engaging story.

Wish I could ink stuff this good. So then all the text bubbles and lettering comes at the very end. Is the placement of those pre planned or do you sort of fit them in there at that point?

Depends. Sometimes I do the lettering first and work the art around it... especially if the script is dialog heavy

Wow...Just being in a room with you makes me wanna be quiet and listen to you or watch you draw. Being your apprentice made me feel as though I hit the lottery. Still does when I continue to see your work and growth.

I love Elf quest and have since I was a kid, My mom gave me her BIG ELFQUEST GATHERUM book and I would draw Skywise all over everything when I was little. The book sadly could not withstand my handling and feel apart just before My second year in high school. I still have one of the pages with the Santa and his "Elves" comic on it and I have kept the Largest Skywise Piece I ever drew safely tucked away in an art folder. I'm so Glad I had a chance to meet you At Kumoricon 2010. It was an honor to shake your hand! Thanks so much for being a part of Elfquest. You are truly one of a kind!

You did a wonderful job on this. You kept Wendy's 'look' of the elves with your pencils (what's it like to finish her roughs? just curious) and did such a nice clean ink job to finish it.

i liked the Wolf Shadow story.^-^ felt really bad for Skywise,trying to adjust to everyone being so different. sure am glad the damage done by the Palace wasn't permanent.who knows what they'd of had to done with Skywise then?!
