Description
In my opinion i think this is the best shot i have so far of this hummingbird..[link] <
I think the wings are in a better position with this shot what do you think??
This is one of my
Facts
The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is by far the most common species that breeds in the eastern half of North America
Ruby-throats are intensely inquisitive and thus easily attracted to feeders, where males in particular typically display aggressive territoriality toward rival hummers, other birds, and even insects such as bees, butterflies, and sphinx moths. They quickly become accustomed to human presence, and will swoop down to investigate red articles of clothing, possibly as potential food sources. Feeders hung at windows attract as many visitors as ones farther from structures, and the bird that claims a feeder as its territory may spend much of the day perched nearby, guarding the food source against intruders. Many hummingbird watchers find "Hummer Warz" endlessly entertaining, although the chases are obviously serious business to the hungry birds. For a short period immediately after fledging, a female will tolerate the presence of her own young at the feeder, but they are soon treated the same as other adult birds - as rivals in pursuit of the food necessary to prepare for the fall migration.

You are SO good at this. What technique do you use. Do these birds hover in one place for longish periods

hmm this was weeks of patience Eve, tho yes they do hover . but chit are they fast... it took me this long to get the little girl used to me sitting near her feeder.. i just waited till she came at me.. and focused manually and started shooting its important to have everything set up and ready to go

Really GREAT shot!
How short did you set the exposure time to get a so-clear shot of a so-rapid wing movement?
Excellent job!!

Bravo! A gorgeous photo! Well done.
Only thing I would change if you were so inclined (although changing nature pics is always a no-no), is to have a portion of a flower in the bottom left-hand corner to anchor the whole picture. At the moment, the bird is floating in mid-air (duh of course it is), but seems detached. Hope that makes sense.
I still love the photo!

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!!!!
Crystal sharp focus and you captured the wings in the best position, stretched back to show the little body. Like the soft green background and gentle light. He almost sparkles, he's so clear (or is it a female?).

yes this is a female, the male has a ruby throat (red) if you see him in the right light.. most times it looks black

Great shot
The small F stop and fast shutter speed work well.
Wonder if you could catch one from the front?

hmm no i manual focus now cause of the AF buzzing plus i think the noise is the mirror going up and down??? no im using a nikon D50
this is not your first boy out of what you have now 8 kiddies??
π: 0 β©: 1
BFG In reply to Sonny2005 [2006-07-06 20:15:06 +0000 UTC]
5 girls and now the boy
You could set the f stop around 5 and set manual focus on somthing about 6 feet away, then that would give you about 4 - 14 feet in focus on a 50mm lens.
Does the Nikon have a remote?

wow wont you have big wedding bills...lol my first boy is now 16mth so very different to my girls...
Ill give that a go.. thank you and yes the Nikon has a remote but the hummer lets me get with in about 1-2 meters from her.. just depends on what angle she comes in on ..
