It's the wing from same type of butterfly taken with an electron microscope. The color is "generated" through the structure in the "scales". To get the image we gave the wing a metal coating, despite the coat the color was as vibrant as ever.

This is most definitely one of my favourite photographs of all time. The Blue Morpho has always been my favourite butterfly since i first saw it as a little girl at the Detroit Zoo!

That zoo does have a well-designed butterfly house. I really enjoyed my first visit there this year and will probably go back later this winter to check out the rest of it.
