Description Update: Since I have a scanner now I switched the photo of the drawing to a much clearer scanned version.

The old Swedish translation of LotR is known for its many mistakes. Åke Ohlmarks, as the translator was called, even managed to irritate Tolkien quite a bit

Anyway, if Ohlmarks happened upon something he didn't understand, he usually just made up stuff... Which can be hilarious at some places

Tolkien: "So old that almost I feel young again, as I have not felt since I journeyed with you children."

...got translated into:

...which translates "you" to "my". He probably forgot that Legolas is a lot older than Aragorn and Gimli, which explains why he calls them children this time. Instead Ohlmarks thinks that Tolkien wrote "you" by mistake and changed it, so most people in Sweden thought that Legolas had kids that he had been traveling with earlier...

Fail... I have no idea if I ever read his translations... I do remember being annoyed at the name changed in the Swedish version.. like changing Baggins to Bagger and Hobbits to Hobber... now everytime I heard that i think sof hobos living in holes under ground.

Sorry for the boldtyping.. I managed to hit some button on the board and now I can't undo it..

I have read that the reason he changed "hobbits" to "hober" was because he thought that people would think "hobbit" sounded too much like "sockerbit"

Seriously? Why was he hired anyway?

Lots of people held him in high esteem for some reason (that's why there wasn't any new translations until he was dead). Even though he later wrote a book (and for some reason was allowed to have it published) that was very mean and kind of insane. It's called Tolkien och den svarta magin, or something similar. Quite freaky

That's odd... Oh yeah I heard about that.. something about Tolkien being a dark wizard or something.. I supposed he got pissed at Tolkien for not liking his work but seriously.. that's taking it a bit far..

Poor Legolas and his cute little children
Its a beautiflul and very detailed drawing though, of this accidental little family

Sootness In reply to MoonFey [2010-12-20 17:22:01 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

The reason why Gandalf isn't detailed like the rest is because he wasn't a part of the drawing. I doodled him on the side of the paper before I did the Legolas's Children pic and when I started on the background for Legolas it sort of grew around Gandalf too, and suddenly he had a reason for laughing

Good things tend to come by as accidents, or just to appear by themselves.
This picture wouldn't be at all, as good without Gandalf, it is his reaction towards "Legolas's family", that turns this picture into a dramatic scene of happenings.

Good thing Gandalf got swallowed by the picture then!

Yes, often when you have an idea it might start to turn into something completely different. Then you just have to decide if you want to let it, or if you still want to follow your idea. I usually do both if it's possible By following the new happenings, and do my old idea later. Why choose when you can have the whole cake!

Aww! your picture ate poor Gandalf, hopefully he turned himself into a cake first!

(well he is a wizard, so he will survive spending some time in the stomach of a picture, he might even find it interesting to study a drawing from the inside, you'll never know)

Since he turned white after that balrog incident, maybe he'll turn pink after the picture incident?

Mmm... Gandalf cake... I wonder if it has whipped cream and strawberries

Aw, a pink Gandalf would be so cute!
I don't think I would like to eat a Gandalf Cake thought, but on the other hand a Gandalf Cake would make for a great new picture of yours, wouldn't it?

Don't let go of your father's hands, kids, you might get lost!

Sometimes a bad translator can be a good thing! It means you've got lots of stuff to poke fun at

Did you ever get a "proper" translation??

P.S. Like the drawing...

Sootness In reply to S-Sabina [2010-10-15 04:54:43 +0000 UTC]

Yes, we recently got a new translation (finally!), but they waited until long after the old translator died. Maybe they didn't want to make him angry since he was a crazy person

Well, at least one good thing came from the old translation: There's lot's of funny stuff written about it

And thank you for the fav!

Np...

Honesty I feel sorry for people who had to read that(If I'm not mistaken it turns out that Merry killed the Witch King!?)

Right now I'm very grateful to whoever did "local" translation...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sootness In reply to S-Sabina [2010-10-15 15:46:38 +0000 UTC]

I don't remember if it was Merry since I don't remember who's who among Merry and Pippin, but I know it was one of them XD

I'm glad I tried reading the original though. Since the old Swedish translation is a lot harder to read than even the english original, I thought the english would be hard since I'm not very good at that language, but it turned out that Tolkien uses really easy english so it was a lot easier to read

S-Sabina In reply to Sootness [2010-10-17 16:05:09 +0000 UTC]

I always like reading the books in their original language (if I know it), because even in the best translation something gets lost... And I love Tolkien's style, it so simple, and yet he manages to tell so much in a few words... No big words...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sootness In reply to S-Sabina [2010-10-18 04:35:43 +0000 UTC]

Me too. Original version is always best
A pity I couldn't read the original back then 'cause there wasn't a big market for english books (just a shelf or two in one bookstore where I lived. Mostly Stephen King books actually), and there was no internet

Yes, he's very good with words

S-Sabina In reply to Sootness [2010-10-22 01:35:46 +0000 UTC]

When my english was good enough for book reading I already had internet, so never had problem with that. Don't know what would I do without it, 'cause I think that local book-stores had (and still don't have) any books in english...

Sootness In reply to S-Sabina [2010-10-22 19:47:13 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I feel old since I'm from before there was any internet at all

It's good that nowadays you don't have to depend on local shops. Everything can be ordered over the web. My fav bookshop is an internet shop and they can get books from all over the world

ManekinekoNoHime In reply to Sootness [2010-08-16 07:44:38 +0000 UTC]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sootness In reply to ManekinekoNoHime [2010-08-16 11:37:40 +0000 UTC]

Sootness In reply to Gwendelyn [2010-08-02 15:19:07 +0000 UTC]

Gwendelyn In reply to Sootness [2010-08-02 16:01:20 +0000 UTC]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sootness In reply to Gwendelyn [2010-08-05 04:33:03 +0000 UTC]

Terry Pratchett och Neil Gaiman: Good Omens
