Description This should be in resources. -sigh-. Why won't they let GIFs in?

UM UM UM If you can't see it move, please download.

Here's the actual Umbreon deviation.

Here are some explanations of the steps (does anybody bother reading these? XD) (I also apologize for the fast gif images)

My line drawings literally take about 5-8 stages. Here's a good example. By the way, the first five images are scanned badly because of my first scanner; I switch to a higher quality one later.

---

Step One : The First Rough
What I like to do generally is sketch out the rough proportions of my drawing subjects first. This isn't a step I always do; I tend to use Mr. Stickman if I know what I'm drawing.
I drew the moon shape--he's the moonlight pokΓ©mon, after all--of his cape, and my idea for Poke-Umbreon to be settled between the folds is sketched out. Initially it's good to keep some details within the rough draft so you can elaborate later (like his hat, and the shoulder drapes of his cape).
Keep in mind to keep the sketch fairly light. Stressing the canvas will make your creativity kick your ass in fury later on.

Step Two : The Rough Detail
I knew what to do with his face right away; that was drawn first. It's a good idea to draw what you're sure of first so that you can either adjust it to perfection or adjust other things to it as you add on. I first wanted him to cradle some roses and have some thorns run up his arm (more on why that didn't happen later). You can see how I also drew the faint beginnings of his cape. I was still iffy about Poke-Umbreon so I kept him at a sketch.

Step Three : The Big Concept Change
...Please don't shoot me T_T. There was a step between this one and the last that showed how Poke-Umbreon was drawn but the file was corrupted, and by the time I noticed, it was too late. I decided roses were more Leafeon's thing, and I had to try and strangle SOME originality into Umbreon's character. So I ditched the roses and thorns and dress shirt sleeves while slapping on some bell sleeves with crescent moon cuff tighteners along with a ball of smoke... erm... Not to mention I also began the flow of the cape. Poke-Umbreon was drawn head-first, followed by body, and then by collar, and he refused to lounge inside the folds of the cape. -facepalm-

Step Four : The Additional Detail
Here, I revamped the original concept of his feet, and decided to add another hand. I did the finer detail of the sort of shredded look of his cape, plus refined some more stuff and lines that can't really be described unless you look between the two pictures. When I'm at this step, I'm not afraid to harass the detail onto my drawing; this is where my creativity does a big squeal of fangirling joy and goes messy.

Step Five : Cleaning the Sketch
This is like inking, 'cept still with pencil. I deepen some important lines and keep some others light, while I erase some guidelines and add final details (details usually shouldn't be changed after this stage for me). The lines begin to look crisper, with more promise. I added a collar to Person-Umbreon and lowered his cape for... ahem. My personal enjoyment, durhur.
Darkening certain lines is a good help when you're inking; you know which thickness of line to use. More on that later.

Step Six : The Inking
I go over the lines with my .3 and .5 archive ink fineliners (not very expensive; they just sound prestigious, is all). I'm guilty of always overriding lines with one another where they shouldn't, but I'm not too worried since I can clean that up digitally. I also decided to have fun with name calligraphy; all of the Eeveelutions have their name written in their own style, but I didn't include it in the final colour deviation because it drives from the style.

Step Seven : The Clean Up
Okay. Here's where my eraser does like a happy cat and rubs. No purring, though; that's just creepy. I make sure to erase diagonally in little areas at a time; washing your eraser over the page in one fell swoop either rips it or does nothing. -knows from experience... sigh- It begins to look really clean, and also, if you're like me and you like to draw details into the eyes, by all means ink that if you want. I just keep them blank for easier digital colouring.

Step Eight : The Final Detail
I say a lot of "Clean Up" and "Detail" ._. So here's where I take my large Pilot fineliner and carefully thicken some lines. This isn't really necessary (and I'm not very good at it either) if you're using this for digital lineart, but it's good if you'd like to see the lines pop out of the physical picture. It helps to add depth, but other than that, it's a fun and optional step.

Thanks for taking the painstaking time to read, if you did!

Indeed. XD Getting a good scan of the picture is the best basic move 8) it sets the route for a good picture.

you should do a process drawing, too.

D: But I'm not good at things like that. I usually draw on the computer, and when I do draw on paper, I don't have the scanning time!''

That's my problem, not that I'm not wanting to do it. My scanner is piled under things and about every month I get around to scanning the pictures that I drew. XD;

I think I might scan some soon.

Okay, digitally, all you have to do is hit the "Print Screen" or PrtSc key on your keyboard. Take a screenshot every few stages and do a little commentary of what you've done

UM...

My sketches span over a few days, but they really just take a few hours. Usually the easiest thing to do is to slap on whatever detail whenever inspiration hits...?

Oh, and I read CLAMP manga. Those women are insane. >.>
