Description

The son of Auldon Bolton, Seneca Bolton was the leader of the Sca-R Commission’s Department X, and he specifically oversaw the Avatar Project. The project was an offshoot of Project Uplift, a project spearheaded by Auldon Bolton. Project Uplift sought to extract human consciousness and place it into small orbs, which was part of a plan to save mankind. Essentially, Auldon would perform the transferal of consciousness on a few thousand humans and would store them away while the remaining humans fought off the aliens. This, however, never came to fruition, and was succeeded by the Avatar Project. The Avatar Project sought to extract human consciousness and place it into weapons known as “Scythes,” cybernetic organisms created to combat the alien menace. Auldon Bolton passed away before he could transplant human consciousness into small mechanical orbs, but Seneca assured his father he would continue and ultimately finish what Auldon started.

Seneca, before he rose to his position as leader, was a soldier under Sca-R, and he was a member of Squad-0, an elite squad of highly accomplished and ruthless soldiers, acting as a quick-reaction strike force. Ultimately, though, Seneca had to retire his position in Squad-0, as his jaw was torn clean off his face during a mission to eradicate alien machines. He survived his injuries, but he was left unable to speak. To help his son speak again, Auldon himself built Seneca a mechanical jaw, which allowed him to speak again, though his speech was modulated and harsh, and so he sounded more like a machine than a man.

Now out of Squad-0, Seneca began to dedicate his time to understanding what it was his father was doing. Auldon told his son all about Project Uplift and its goal, which struck Seneca as very fascinating. This Project, however, came at a cost, as many humans chosen as test subjects for Project Uplift would die in the process. Auldon would come to pass, and, as stated before, Seneca promised his father to finish what he started.

After taking leadership over Project Uplift, Seneca soon came to the conclusion that this technology, if perfected, could be utilized in, what he figured to be, a better way. Shortly after taking leadership, Seneca created the Avatar Project, which sought to place human consciousness into cybernetic weapons. But, like with Project Uplift, many died in the many testings of the technology, and many in Department X were losing hope of the technology’s promise. Seneca, though, continued to work diligently, and his efforts would soon pay off. A couple years after the started the Avatar Project, a successful transferral was made. This gave the Project confidence, and after more tests, another successful transferral was made. However, the first two Scythes would later die, and so there was more work to be done. Eventually, another successful transferral was made, and this time, they survived for a few months before dying, but not before they suffered brutal operations to keep them alive. In time, though, he was able to create a Scythe that was able to live, and did not die weeks to months after the transferral of consciousness. Enter Cleo and her brother Ren.

Cleo was the older sister of Ren. Cleo was 17, and Ren was 12. They were taken to the Katalinka Military Base where Seneca was. Seneca was able to take control of the two soon after they came to Kataklinka, and he was very interested in seeing if a younger mind could survive the transferral better, with the prior subjects being over the age of 20. Neither kid wanted to have this done to them, but Seneca proceeded with the procedure, and Cleo was the first to have her consciousness transferred into a Scythe body. Transferred successfully, she was then designated as 04, and from that point, she was addressed as such, with only her brother calling her by her name. Regardless, Cleo was able to survive one whole year as a Scythe, but not without countless repairs to her machine body, most of which were painful. Seneca, however, took notice that the pain she endured seemed to make each recovery better and quicker. Her pain also made her better at destroying the decoys meant to represent the machines sent down by the aliens. Seneca noted that the more pain she had endured, the more ruthlessly efficient she was. Very intrigued, Seneca began to order repairs and tests on her machine body that were designed specifically to be painful and torturous. With every scream, her eyes glowed brighter, her screams grew louder, and she, at one point, broke free of her constraints on the table she was being operated (tortured) on. She had become stronger through pain. Seneca was pleased with what he had found out.

After Cleo’s first year as a Scythe, Seneca ordered Ren’s consciousness to be transferred into a Scythe body, as well. Cleo was aware of this, and she begged Seneca not to do to him what he did to her, for she didn’t want her brother to feel the excruciating pain she felt. Seneca ignored her, though, and proceeded on with his plans. Soon, Ren, too, became a Scythe, and he, too, endured many painful torturings disguised as operations. Initially, Cleo didn’t know the repairs and testings were meant only to inflict pain on them both, but when she did find out, she lashed out and killed those around her, determined to find and kill Seneca. Seneca, though, had foreseen this, and Cleo was quickly shut off. During one of her (actual) repairs, she had a small chip planted in her, and if she were to go rogue, she could be easily “shut off,” which involved locking her whole body up so that, despite being conscious, she couldn't move. Seneca requested to speak to her personally, and told her that if she were to ever do that again, he would personally kill her. Being beaten into submission, Cleo was forced to control herself, as she did not want to die and leave Ren all by himself.

Eventually, Cleo and Ren were deployed on the battlefield, along with a few other Scythes that had been created after them, and they served in countless battles, killing alien machines like how they were designed to. But they needed repairs and maintenance after every battle, and so they both endured intentionally painful and brutal check ups on behalf of Seneca so that they could be filled with rage and anger, as such feelings made them more ruthless and brutal, especially Cleo. Cleo would channel her anger and hatred for Seneca into her fighting, imagining that every machine she killed was Seneca himself.

But Scythes, however, were not immune. On one of their many missions in particular, Cleo and Ren were mortally wounded. Cleo tried to help her brother, but he was dying right before her eyes. Calling in a medical ship to take the two back, the face of Seneca flashed before her. She told herself that this pain and suffering was all Seneca’s fault, and that he was directly responsible for every bit of suffering the two had endured. After the medical ship picked them up and flew back to Kataklinka, Ren succumbed to his mortal injuries and passed away. Inside, a fire raged in Cleo, and when the ship docked at Kataklinka, Cleo ripped out her chip and killed everyone in the ship, proceeding to go on a rampage, killing everyone that got in her way. Her target? None other than Seneca himself.

Upon hearing that Cleo, or “04,” was on a murderous, rage-induced rampage, Seneca tried to shut her off, but he learned that she had ripped her chip out. Seneca, however, had a contingency for this. He knew that normal bullets would not do much to her, and so in the event that he had to kill her, he had created a sword designed specifically to cut through her metal body with the help of a superheated, electrified blade, with each slash delivering a painful, burning, debilitating electric shock.

Before Cleo could advance any further and destroy the entire base, Seneca engaged in a 1-on-1 battle with her. Despite it having been years since he left Squad-0, his fighting skill had not suffered, and upon its return, it allowed him to go toe-to-toe with his failed creation. Cleo landed a blow right to Seneca’s right eye, rendering it useless, but Seneca was ultimately able to overpower her, thanks to his remaining vision in his left eye allowing him to track her movements, not even letting out a scream or grunt, ultimately killing Cleo. After the battle, he fell to the ground, passing out, the world around him going dark.

Seneca later awoke to find himself in a hospital bed, both of his eyes missing, now replaced by a visor that granted him superior vision. After the battle at Kataklinka, Sca-R was hesitant to allow him to continue the Avatar Project, and it was eventually shut down. With hesitance, Sca-R allowed him to continue working on Project Uplift, as the transferral of consciousness was not to be used as a weapon, but as a tool to preserve mankind.

A couple years after the failed Avatar Project was shut down, Project Uplift was struggling to get enough funding, and it seemed as though the Project would shut down soon. Seneca tried to get more funding from Sca-R, but the Project was ultimately shut down for good, but not due to a lack of funding. Kataklinka was attacked by the alien machines, and the alien machines slaughtered everyone there, including Seneca, marking the end to Project Uplift. After the massacre at Kataklinka and Seneca’s death, Sca-R focussed its funding elsewhere.

Despite his Avatar Project having failed and despite Project Uplift going defunct, a statue was built in Seneca’s honor, as mankind viewed him as a great mind.
