Umm...My reasoning for this is that I haven't drawn a mermaid in a very long time. So here's a new mermaid. ^^
Normal HB pencil then fixed up in photoshop.

very cool piece. I found your page through like a random search in the thumbs forums. I like how the mermaid is positioned in your composition. It's centered by the round shape of the figure really accents the entire feel of the picture. I love how her expression is pensive yet beautiful. It really embodies the feel of a mermaid and how one would think if they were a mermid. The line quality is strong and very detailed. Not too hard yet not to thin to create balanced features. A very strong piece and very acceptable being digitally improved. Nice job and keep going.

OMG! O.O *jaw drops* HOW THE HELL DID YOU LEARN TO DRAW LIKE THAT! *sulks over to my drawing books tearing them up* *sigh* I feel better now... *hugs mermaid* I love mermaids! I have been called Ariel ever since 7th grade when I died my hair auburn. I love that way you colored it and...well I love the whole thing. I am speechless and have no idea what to say other then OMG I LOVE HER! CAN I TAKE HER HOME!

interesting take on a mergirl.
it took me a second to figure out the swirls on her tail fin were the two ends of a whale-shaped tail, and not two random clashing swirls on a more eel-like one. a bit more shading on her left fluke'd probably fix that.
her body also looks a little funny right after the point that her tail merges with the human torso. it's a bit thick.
i don't quite get the light source for this image. she's got highlighted spots all over, and the parts of her that arn't highlighted just seem lightly illuminated. but then there's the dark shadows, i.e, under her arm and at the base of her tail fins, that don't fit with the rest of the shading on the image.
the water isn't very watery. if you don't quite know how to draw water, flipping an image of the sea upside down [so that the sea's on top] and creatively working it into the background of your image it might look more convincing.

I'm doing a Bachelor degree in Acting. ^^ It's concentrated on Shakespeare and ancient drama and I love it.
I got into the program by auditioning. You have to go through this crazy array of auditions. First you have a basic audition with a 2 minute monologue of your choice, song and small essay about what you can bring to the course. Then if you get pass that, you have to go in for a interview which is a contemporary monologue (3 min) and a Shakespearean monologue that they choose (5 min), plus a song and about half an hour of interview with the head of Theatre and a few of the teachers from the course. They ask crazy questions like.. "Who 'is' Lori?" and expect quite the surreal answer. When I applied for the course over 1000 people auditioned and only 15 got into the course, that includes the Stagecraft part of the course.

It's insanely hard to get in. But worth it in the end. ^_^ I first got involved in theatre through Stargazer Youth Theatre, a summer employment thing that I did for 5 years. It just grew from there. Now I do stand-in work for television shows, been in an independant movie.. a few professional productions and all that jazz. *grins* Doesn't mean that I don't still continue sketching though.

Wow, this is a pencil drawing? Very nice. I love the shapes and curls on the character. I agree on the background, perhaps you should think of something different, that would suit the drawing more. I know you can do it, I hate drawing backgrounds too
