Chapter 10: Demons Among usAs The Soul Killers walked down the lifeless hallways of the base, Onwa kept looking back at Hakar. Secretly, Onwa still wasn't sure about Hakar's state of mind. He had given the Reaver an order to come collect Hakar and take him to join them once he felt he had "calmed down", but had he really? Onwa always had faith in Hakar, but Sauvix was right, RAAM's death has pushed Hakar in a new direction.
Onwa opted to keep an eye in Hakar, just in case he snapped. It could cost them this mission.
The group were beginning to wonder if they were trekking in one big circle, the halls of this base weren't any different to the hollow, everything looked the same, right down to the dull blue lights which brightened up the halls ever so slightly.
Fortunately, something new finally crossed their path, they reached what looked like the entrance to a large room. Onwa didn't lead them in right away, he peeked round the corner to double check if the place was safe. It seemed empty, other than a few computers, on tables and on the walls, but something didn't feel right.
Sure enough, just as Onwa peered his head around the corner further, he was greeted by a hail of gunfire. He pulled his head back just in time.
It was a sentry turret, it stood at the back of the room, the blue LED at the top of it glared at the spot it had seen Onwa at, like some sort of watching eye. The turret knew he was there, all it had to do was wait for him to reappear. In the meantime, it made a small beeping sound to alert it's presence.
"Sentry gun!" Onwa hissed "Who has a grenade?"
"I do!" Zaach whispered back, handing over his bolo grenade to Onwa.
Onwa waited for a few seconds before tossing it round the corner in the direction of the turret, which fired once it spotted Onwa's hand, but only narrowly missed him.
However, it failed to notice the grenade land right next to it. The grenade exploded, obliterating the turret into scrap metal.
The Soul Killers entered the room, other than a door further down the right, it seemed like a dead end. The door had enough security panel which kept it locked.
"Sauvix, can you hack this door, like you did with the other one?" Onwa asked.
"Of course, I shall not be long." Sauvix replied, he went over to the door's keypad and began his hacking.
While Sauvix got to work with hacking the door open, Zaach looked around at a particular computer on the wall, it had several monitor's which were showing different parts of the base. Curious, he approached one of the monitors and gently tapped a button next to it, the screen flashed to another part of the base, but this was something Zaach wanted to see.
It looked like a human "Office" room, in the room stood An Cog Gear without a helmet, he was chatting with Dr Solomon, one of the scientist's he had seen and overheard back at the HQ.
"You were in the Pendulum wars, weren't you Pierce?" Dr Solomon asked.
"Mostly peace-keeping tours, didn't do much fighting until E-Day." The one called Pierce explained. "I got enough experience fighting the grubs to rise up in the ranks."
"Then Cyron found you?" Solomon pointed out.
"Yeah, they were impressed, wanted me to become a squad commander for their own troops." Pierce continued. "Gave me the usual promises of better food, better pay, better living conditions and the big one… a better chance of survival."
Pierce looked at Solomon, who was trying to hide the fact that he was quaking in fear.
"What is it Doc?" Pierce sighed. "You know you can't hide what you think from anyone."
"It's just… I really don't think Project Saviour is ready! Why must we test them now?!" Solomon barked.
"Look, I don't agree with it either, but the big office upstairs has spoken, it's out of our hands!" Pierce replied.
"Do they not realise how dangerous the test subjects are? They are volatile! We need more time to get their programming right!" Solomon retorted.
"All we can do is hope the guys in the bunker can work fast enough." Pierce stated.
Solomon very quickly paced the floor, like he was trying to work out what exactly he wanted to get off his chest.
"What about the break in?" Solomon pointed out. "Locust aggressors are coming for us!"
"I'm leading Security teams to dispatch them!" Pierce replied.
"Well, you better hurry before they get to us…"
Those words got Pierce to get up and hurry out of the room, Solomon was left on his own for a few seconds. Zaach watched as Solomon suddenly started to get moving himself.
"No, I have to warn them!" Solomon hissed to himself. "Project Saviour cannot be ready! We must concentrate on getting rid of those Locust!"
Zaach slowly turned away from the security monitor, unsure of what to think of all that.
By this time, Sauvix had hacked the door open, the group went through, but Hakar stayed and faced the seemingly shocked Zaach.
"What is wrong Zaach?" Hakar asked.
"Whatever this Project Saviour is, it is dangerous. Even the humans do not like it." Zaach stuttered.
"All the more reason to destroy it." Hakar said, trying to slap Zaach out of his state, he went ahead through the door, with Zaach following him.
"Drones don't fear… Drones don't fear…" Zaach thought to himself.
---
Onwa, Taus and Sauvix had gone a few paces ahead of Hakar and Zaach, continuing down the straight and narrow hallway. Right now going forward was the only option, as every time they saw left or right, they found the way was blocked by sealed security doors, their grenades would not penetrate the heavily reinforced steel doors and there was no panels to hack open.
After a short trek, they reached another area, it looked like sort of little prison block, which had 6 small cages, the bars of which were sturdy looking, the room had a cold metal floor, the walls were the same shade of blue as everywhere else The Soul Killers had been so far and the room was being watched by security cameras, one in each corner. At a right hand corner of the room was a rather small control station with an observation window. While it did seem to be a prison, this was not the case.
This place was actually a containment cell for every Locust that was captured. The humans running this base would bring their prizes here, where they would be observed and then taken for experiments. The Cells were filled with Wretches, they snarled and clawed at the walls and bars of their cages, desperate to get out.
"Captured Wretches?" Sauvix asked. "Interesting, what plans did they have?"
"That is a good question." Onwa replied
"I think we should let them out, don't you?" Sauvix stated. "They may be fodder, but we could use the extra help."
"Always one to have a plan, don't you?" Onwa joked.
"That is why Hakar keeps me alive." Sauvix chortled "I shall see if I can release them!"
Sauvix went into the control room and he began to hack away at the panels, Onwa could see the wretches were eager to get out, they snarled louder and began to swipe into the air. Onwa turned back to see sparks fly out of the control panel as Sauvix worked faster, within seconds the gates opened.
The wretches swooped out, screaming and swiping, before scaling the walls, Onwa watched in satisfaction as the wretches climbed up and tore through a ventilation shaft, freedom was theirs.
Just as the last Wretch escaped through the vent, Hakar and Zaach rejoined the group.
"We gained some additional allies." Onwa said, smiling.
"That's all well, but I think we should keep moving." Hakar replied, sounding impatient.
The group did not argue, and continued further down the complex, leaving the empty containment cell behind.
---
Within moments of leaving the containment cells, they soon reached what looked like a large lobby, with two upper decks and further down the hall, an "Elevator" which could lead the group to where the wanted to go.
"An empty place?" Taus asked. "I doubt it."
Taus was proven right, as soon as they took just a few more steps, they were forced to dive behind the pillars, as they were greeted by gunfire. Gears emerged from a few halls next to the elevator, armed with their lancers, they began to chip away at the pillars the group hid behind.
"Thought so." Taus joked, even when under fire.
"Retaliate!" Onwa ordered.
The group all withdrew their hammer bursts, save for Taus who opted for a Boltok pistol, and fired back at Gears, while they did manage to gun down a few of them, there were plenty more ready for a fight.
While the group were firing away at the Gears by the elevator, one Gear was trying to flank them. He ducked behind a pillar on his side, and kept to the side of the lobby, he soon reached The Soul Killers side of the room.
Now ready to strike, the Gear withdrew his lancer and aimed for one of them, but once again, did not get his chance. He thought no one had spotted him, but Hakar had seen right through his moves and waited for him to fall for his own trap.
Hakar smashed the butt of his hammerburst into the Gear's face, the Gear collapsed to the ground and went down on all fours, deciding to practice what he preached about "finishing off your prey" to the other Soul Killers, he battered the butt of his rifle into the Gear's head, causing the helmet to shatter and his head to burst.
Just as The Soul Killers finished off the last few Gears, up ahead, the elevator opened and much to Zaach's dread, another flame trooper appeared. Zaach tried to shoot past him and aim for the tips of his fuel tanks, but it was useless, his shots simply ricocheted off the heavy Gear's armour.
The flame trooper spewed flames at The Soul Killers, burning the pillars and causing each Soul Killer to dive out of the way, they hopelessly opened fire to try and hit the tanks, but the trooper was surprisingly fast, he dodged most of the bullets, and the ones that hit him just bounced off his armour, Zaach even tried to get behind the soldier, but he kept backing up to elevator, making it harder and harder to attack him.
At first, it seemed as though they couldn't fight this soldier, but Zaach noticed an air duct on the ceiling above, it was shaking.
The air duct cover burst off, a wretch jumped out and dived onto the flame trooper's back, the wretch screeched as it pierced the flame pack with it's claws. The creature was shoved off by the outgoing flames just as it scratched open a few holes, the flame trooper screamed as he spun around, desperately trying to get the flame pack off, while his back was turned, The Soul Killers opened fire, the soldier exploded into flames, any body parts not destroyed were quickly swallowed by the fire.
Sprinklers turned on and sprayed the incinerated cog with ice cold water. While the wretch was also killed by the blast of the explosion, his little sacrifice was not in vein.
Not wanting to waste anymore time, The Soul Killers dashed for the elevator, Sauvix slammed his fist on the "Up" button, the elevator doors slammed shut, leaving behind the small chaotic scene behind.
----
The lift stuttered for a few seconds before coming to a complete halt, reaching the floor that Sauvix had set it to. The group had to keep on their toes, as they weren't entirely sure what was going to on the other side, that's when it occurred to them that they had jumped in purely out of gamble.
The elevator doors opened, showing that they could only turn right, but Sauvix remained unsure.
"The fire fight downstairs was a close call, just think what could be up here as well." He said in concern.
"It does seem to quiet up here." Zaach stated.
"If we survived everything down below, what makes up here any different?" Hakar asked.
"Extra security? They could be doubling their forces as we speak!" Sauvix replied.
Zaach peered his head out of the elevator and looked around the corner, it was a long, stone corridor, aside from a warning light on the ceiling flashing, it looked fairly unguarded. Up ahead, a metallic fire door was open, there looked too be another corridor opening further down on the left side of the corridor, while on the hallway's right wall, he could just make out two glass windows.
"Looks like no one is around!" Zaach reported.
"Then let's no waste anymore time! Let's go!" Onwa ordered. The group stepped out of the elevator, getting a clearer look at the hallway, just as they stepped out, a human scientist dashed from the left corridor, he looked as though he was heading in the fire door's direction.
"I must warn them!" He cried. "The Locust are getting closer!"
Just as he said that, he turned around and saw The Soul Killers, all of them looking directly at him. Zaach took one look at him and knew who he was.
"Oh my god!" The scientist screamed, he made a mad dash away for metal door, and then turned around a corner to the left, Taus raised his hammerburst and pointed it at the fleeing scientist, but Zaach stopped him.
"Wait! I know of him! He is…"
Zaach couldn't continue explaining, 2 Gears appeared from the left corner and began to dash for The Soul Killers, they both blasted a few burst shots of Lancer fire, making The Soul Killers duck behind the wall of corridor the scientist had just emerged from. Hakar and Zaach returned fire, quickly and easily killing the two Gears. A Flame trooper also emerged from the left corner, but he saw the "Emergency" button on his side of the door and smashed it, the door began to close, The Soul Killers tried to approach the door, but the flame trooper gave them a blast of Scorcher fire to warn them off.
Zaach had one grenade left, he got it out, but didn't toss it right away, when the door was nearly closed, Zaach ducked down and tossed the grenade through the narrow gap, he had let the grenade cook for a few seconds, so the flame trooper could only see it land next to his feet. The door slammed shut just as the explosion occurred.
Satisfied with the move, Zaach turned back to the others, who were slightly puzzled by Zaach's earlier move.
"Why didn't you let me kill him?" Taus asked
"I stopped you because I know that human." Zaach replied "His name is Solo…Solom…" He was having a hard time pronouncing a human name.
"…Solomon! He knows more about Project Saviour! If we can capture him, he may lead us right to it!" Zaach explained, the rest of the group muttered to each other before Onwa stepped forward.
"Agreed." He said. "That human is to be captured!" The Soul Killers nodded in agreement.
Zaach faced the windows to the right of them, it looked like some kind of security control room, he turned just to see another released wretch tearing away at the body of a Gear that had been on duty there, the wretch leapt for the window and smashed it open.
"One question, how do we open that door?" Taus asked, pointing to the now sealed metal fire door.
"I could hack it open from that security station.." Sauvix replied "Give me a moment."
Sauvix climbed through the smashed window, the wretch was still in the room, all it did was glare at him as he began his usual hacking. Within an instant, the fire door began to rise up, Sauvix had opened it.
"Almost too easy!" He chuckled, as he climbed back through the window and rejoined the others, as it opened, they were greeted by the sight of decapitated Cog, his body pieces burning away slowly. The Soul Killers nodded at the sight and began the pursuit of Solomon.
