Over all its a nice picture but it lacks a few things to make it seem realistic.
What I mean by that is for vision for for instance. You have snow flying by yet you picked a non snowy map. so it doesnt really fit as well.
As for originality well I don't think I have seen anything like this before so it looks original to me.
As for technique facial expressions are all great so id say you have great technique that and the snow flying by is a nice touch in it self. Along with the light coming forth from the lantern.
Impact. I can see that there all sad and worried and it makes for a good impact.

The ''map'' actually was dark room, what you see here is a complete scenebuild made by yours truly, even though I get your point, there should be more snow in the ground if there was snow there to begin with.
