Description
This is an illustration created for a personal project about mankind getting a bit too up close and personal with his heritage. That big fella is an angel, while the foreground guys are descendants of the nephilim (biblical half breed giants spawned when angels and humans bump uglies, yyyyeah)Related content

This is in no way a "rip off" of Safonkin, there isn't any art which resembles this piece in its entirety. If you're referring to the size of the Angel and features of muscularity I could kind of understand your point of view, but even then that would be like saying anyone that has produced a piece of artwork with a giant that has similar muscular features of a giant in someone elses artwork is a "rip off", which is completely absurd. Therefore I must conclude that the statement made regarding this artwork as a rip off is completely invalid. By the way I believe this was the art being compared:

That guy was a prick. I had never even heard of Safonkin when I painted this, and I still don't know any of his work. Aside from that, this piece was picked out of 20 thumbnails and refined repeatedly over the course of a month.. and the weird gummy stuff on the guy's back were suggested by one of my co-students. If that was in whatever Safonkin piece the guy was talking about, then it's double retarded.

hahahaha i can humbly say to you that Nephilim in hebrew means giant whereas Malakim means angel. Angels mated with the women of the earth and nephilim were their off spring which means the big dude is a nephilim and not an angel.........having said that, this is one of the best nephilim artwork i've ever seen! Thumbs up!

I can only applaud you for keeping true to the original Jewish folktale but I would like to see how that big guy would get a woman pregnant lol.

Sweet! Love the tree horns! They're nice and sweeping, yet branch out enough to make them distinguishably tree-ish.

Btw that person saying you ripped off of "Safonkin" is a complete imbecile. I looked his art up and the only resemblance was the on titled "Sun Gone Out". Although your angel resembles that giant or w/e it is next to the angel in Safonkin's picture, it's just similar.
Originality doesn't really exist in art. EVERYTHING has inspiration. And if we want to get technical then we're all plagiarizing because we're interpreting God's creations and trying our best to duplicate/change it.

This is really cool. I was just reading about the Nephilim in the books of Hebrew and had to look on deviantart to see if anyone interpreted them through their art. Very cool!
Question: Do you still make pictures like this? Or even take ideas?

sourgasm In reply to wi11-4k [2011-10-16 04:35:12 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! I've always been interested in the Nephilim, beyond simply trying to figure out which historical peoples they may have actually been seeing.
This particular image takes place on a planet like ours, long after their own apocalypse, during a time of rebirth. The people of earth have interplanetary travel and, much to their surprise, find another race going through the exact same cycle as our own. It's kind of a riff on infinite timelines- humanity acting as interplanetary visitors for prehistoric man of another planet.
Anyway, I don't get to do stuff like this much anymore. Too busy with work !

Oh, you like my kitties, do you? Fantastic. Of course, I'm not really an artist nor did I ever claim to be. I'm merely an appreciator of art(original art, that is), and I simply took a few photographs so that I would have a little something, however droll and minuscule my contribution may be, to give back to this lovely online community. You, however, made a very poor attempt to copy the work of another artist(one that is a bit underground and very unlikely to be known by many people on this site) and then pass it off as your own.
I must admit, that's really the only problem I have with this site. It is open to the public. Its a place where any average Joe can post their work. Most of the time, that turns out to be a very good thing. Most of the time, the work posted here is good and original, and one would never really be able to see it any place but here on this site. Sometimes, though, a Joe like yourself slips through with a few original works of his own which happen to be very good for what they are. Then, as if he really needed to at all, he has one piece among his originals that wasn't his idea at all, but he's taking credit for it. Of course, who on this small website would know that? Its just a bunch of amateurs here, right? Certainly, nobody here has any real knowledge of the professional art world. Well, there are more than a few folks here that do have a little knowledge.
Look, all I'm saying is, if you're going to post your art....post YOUR art. You're obviously talented, and you've obviously got more than enough ideas of your own without having to resort to blatant plagiarism. Of course, what do I know? I'm probably not adequately "qualified" to judge.

Oh, and here's the really funny part- I browsed your precious Safonkin's Web site a bit. He is one of the most insane rip-off artists I've ever seen. All art is merely imitation, but he literally copies the compositions of countless renaissance artists and a fair amount of early 19th century guys as well.
Again, stick to what you know. Taking cute pictures of kittens while listening to metal.

You're insane. I had never heard of your artist until you mentioned his name. I was unable to find a single piece of work that resembled the painting I posted. Please produce it.
I actually take extreme offense to your presumptuous scolding. This painting is based on a thoroughly researched and completely original idea of my own. I have been working on the world it takes place in for years and this is just a small glimpse into that vision. I explained it in repeated posts above yours in this comment thread, and I have no reason to explain it further to the likes of you.
Get over yourself and realize that assumption is the hallmark of the ignorant.

it would actually make more sense if the naphilim was the giant thing because the large nephils were produced when fallen angels mated with human, i think you have it the other way around. great art work btw.

sourgasm In reply to J-o-v [2011-06-07 09:37:16 +0000 UTC]
the little guy in center is a human. the two guys in foreground are descendants of the nephilim of the planet my story takes place on. they are much larger than humans, but it's hard to tell without a good scale indicator, which i'd like to fix if i could find the time. the big big guy is an angel, though from a lower, "guardian" echelon.
anyways, thanks for looking and commenting!

all in all though, very nice work. sorry about the thing i got bored lol. so by chance whered you get your influence from for the angel? if you don't mind me asking that is.

"well, god did impregnate mary while leaving her a virgin. maybe he just had rrrreal small uglies, you know?
my mom would kill me for that comment." - sourgasm
And lots of people probably wanted to kill the author of "The Marian Conspiracy" when he stated that he'd uncovered evidence that the whole Virgin Birth belief was caused by a language mistranslation. aparantly someone managed to turn "woman" into "virgin" when translating that particular passage.
Now I ask you, how could anyone mistake "woman" for "virgin"?
Anyways back on topic, I've seriously never seen an angel represented like that. Most people tend to make them look like really beautiful winged humans (just like they forget Satan wasn't always the Devil), which while pretty, gets old after a few million similar images. I like this because its different.
