”What do you think it is…?” asked Kestrel, keeping her voice low.

”I don’t know...it smells awful, whatever it is.” Wren replied, sniffing at it.

”W-we really shouldn’t be here.” Pigeon stuttered, keeping her distance from the thing the other two mares were investigating.

”Don’t be such a foal.” Kestrel teased, circling the thing. ”This is cool!”

Wren nodded in agreement, sniffing around the human machine. ”Hey, look at these! Eww, they stink.” Wren said as she pulled up her head holding a pair of human shoes.

Pigeon wrinkled her nose at the sight--and smell--of the shoes. ”We really shouldn’t be here!” she squeaked out. ”Humans could be close by!”

”Pfft, just let them try to catch me!” Kestrel boasted with her head held high.

”Kestrel, you’re pregnant to the point of bursting.” Pigeon reminded her.

Kestrel glared at the other mare and Wren busted out laughing, dropping the shoes. Though she was one the talk, being just as pregnant. Kestrel snorted and turned back to the big, green human machine. With a glare, she turned around and kicked a back hoof at it, creating a loud, metallic clanging sound that grated on all three mares’ ears. And then suddenly, the machine seemed to roar to life for a moment and coughed out a cloud of black smoke with a bang.

All three mares shouted in surprise and bolted back toward the herd without a second thought. Pigeon made it back first, followed by Wren and then finally Kestrel. The mares panted from the exertion and shook from fear.

”And just where have you three been?” Crane asked as she waddled over.

”Nowhere.” Kestrel cut in before Pigeon could give them away. ”JUst out for a leisurely...run…” she finished lamely.

Crane snorted and turned away, clearly reading the lie but not caring enough to pursue it. Kestrel, Pigeon, and Wren integrated back into the herd quickly, none of them really wanting to discuss what had happened.

The herd was livelier and noisier than usual with the addition of three new fillies. Willow, Tiana, and Story raced around the grazing mares, squealing happily in their game of chase. Occasionally their mothers would call out to quit the rough housing, but they were mostly left to their own devices.

”Mommy, watch this!” shouted Story as she did a flying leap into a pile of leaves, sending them flying in all directions.

”Beautiful dive, my love.” Vireo called, stomping her front hoof in applause.

”Pfft, that’s nothing!” Willow shouted as she too went flying into the leaf pile, quickly followed by Tiana.

All three fillies were a tangle of limbs and covered in leaves as they shouted and laughed, making all of the mares smile at their antics.

Perseus and Jason returned from their patrol and were immediately mobbed by the foals crying out for their attention. Tiana and Story nipped at Percy’s legs and tail while Willow reared up to play box with Jason. The stallions played with their foals until everyone devolved into laughter and giggles.

All in all, it was a perfect autumn day.
